Abstract: An optical image bar (12) utilizing polarized light and a coherent spatial light modulator (16) includes birefrigent spatial or angular shearing means (51) for uniformly dividing the spatially-modulated output radiation of a coherent image bar into a pair of laterally-offset, redundantly-modulated, orthogonally-polarized optical field distributions. Imaging optics (17), which include any spatial filtering and/or polarization filtering elements needed for converting those field distributions into correspondingly-modulated spatial intensity distributions, bring the filtered field distributions to focus on an output image plane (13), thereby producing redundantly-modulated, laterally-offset, intensity profiles on the output image plane which spatially sum with each other on an intensity basis. The magnitude of the shear is selected so that the image plane offset of those intensity profiles is approximately equal to half the nominal image plane pixel pitch of the image bar, whereby each of the intensity profiles redundantly overwrites the interpixel intensity nulls of the other. Spatial shearing is preferred for image bars having telecentric imaging optics, but angular shearing is a practical alternative for some embodiments.

Abstract: An electrooptical scanning device for deflection of an optical beam of light across an image plane. The device comprises a body of electrooptical crystal material and a periodic array of parallel, spaced electrodes associated with one surface of the body. A light beam entering the crystal body is caused to interact with electric fields established at the one surface by step applied voltages to the electrode array that influence the deflection of the light beam at the moment of total internal reflection at the one surface. By varying the magnitude of the applied voltages across the electrodes, a corresponding approximation of a desired phase retardation can be produced along the phase front of the light beam. The phase retardation across the light beam can be designed to produce a linear phase front angled beam or can be designed to produce a curvalinear phase front forming a focused spot at the image plane. With the changing of the magnitude of the applied voltages across the electrode array, the beam or spot may be made to move about or scan across the image plane.

Abstract: A thick film line modulator/scanner (50) for use in an electro-optic line printer (14). A light valve utilizes a thin electro-optic layer (212) with the index of refraction of the layer being higher than the neighboring material so that the light can be guided in it. A laser beam (48) is focused into the layer, the beam expanding sideways so that a sheet of collimated light is provided. This light is affected by an array of electrodes (240, 242), consisting of an extended set of individually addressed metal fingers (240) on one side of the film (212), and a broad electrode (242) on the other side of the film. This broad electrode could also be segmented to the individually addressed electrodes. The light diffracted by this electrode set is reimaged onto the recording medium (14) with the zero order diffracted light blocked out, so that each electrode acts as a light modulator for one picture element on the output.

Abstract: A fluid transport system for moving flexible objects includes a conveyor configured to direct fluid flow against opposite sides of flexible objects. A sensor unit senses motion state of flexible objects, and a motion analysis unit is connected to the sensor unit to calculate relative or absolute movement of flexible objects based on the motion state. Overall movement, position, velocity, and orientation of flexible objects can be determined, as well as internal movement of the object attributable to flexure or edge curling. A motion control unit is connected to the motion analysis unit to modify fluid flow directed against opposite sides of flexible objects, accurately adjusting motion of flexible objects.

Abstract: A sensor system (100a) for measuring physical properties of a sheet (116). In one embodiment, the sensor system measures paper curl and thickness using two sensors, each of which includes a member (112), a base (114), and measurement circuit. The two members (112) are positioned in opposition to each other and both contact the sheet (116) as it passes between them. Each member is coupled to a base (114), which includes a measurement circuit. Each measurement circuit measures the displacement of its associated member (112). In another embodiment (Fig. 4), the sensor system measures stiffness and curl using two pairs of opposed sensors. In yet another embodiment, the sensor system measures thermal diffusivity of a sheet using three sensors, one of which includes a heater for heating the sheet of paper and the other two sensors include thermocouples in contact with the sheet of paper for sensing the heat of the paper.

Abstract: A transmissive, backlit color twisted-nematic or super-twisted-nematic liquid crystal display employing a front fiber-optic faceplate (28) as a front retaining element of a liquid crystal cell (18) that increases viewing angle between the display and a viewer while minimizing or eliminating undesirable variations in luminance, contrast ratio and chromaticity is described. This novel configuration effectively decouples the liquid crystal cell (18) and other optical elements (12,14,16) behind the front fiber optic faceplate from the angular orientation of the viewer with respect to the display. The liquid crystal display described in this invention further provides a high quality color display, without viewing parallax, using a color selection filter mosaic (30) outside of the liquid crystal cell. The display also increases luminous efficiency and improves color saturation by concentrating the transmission of available backlight illumination through the use of a rear fiber-optic faceplate (32) and a second rear-mounted mosaic (34) of color interference filters.

Abstract: To reduce the complexity and cost of the optics required for electro-optic line printing and similar functions, a multigate light valve having converging electrodes is illuminated by a light beam which converges toward the entrance pupil of the an imaging lens. The electrodes and the light beam converge toward that point with substantially the same angle of convergence so that the light beam effectively remains longitudinally parallel to the electrodes as it passes through the electro-optic element of the light valve.
