Abstract:
A method of producing an image 5 in a coating applied to an article, the method including the steps of - applying one or more magnets 2 to a ferrous substrate 1 to form a magnetic image, - removing the one or more magnets 2, - applying a coating containing magnetic particles, which align with the magnetic image to form the image 5, and - curing the coating to fix the image. The method may include a delay or dwell period between the formation of the magnetic image and the application of the coating containing magnetic particles. Despite the delay or dwell period, the substrate retains the magnetic image and the intensity / clarity of the image will be maintained.
Abstract:
Abstract:
An optically variable device may be manufactured by aligning magnetic flakes on a surface of an adhesive layer by applying the flakes onto the adhesive layer surface in presence of a magnetic field, and curing the adhesive layer having magnetic flakes adhered to the adhesive layer. When cured, the adhesive layer holds the magnetic flakes oriented, enabling subsequent encapsulation of the oriented magnetic flakes in a coating layer on the adhesive layer, without a substantial loss of orientation of the magnetic flakes.
Abstract:
Abstract:
There is described a sheet-fed printing press and method for orienting magnetic flakes contained in an ink or varnish vehicle applied on sheets. The printing press comprises a printing group (2) designed to apply an ink or varnish vehicle containing magnetic flakes on successive sheets and system designed to orient the magnetic flakes contained in the ink or varnish vehicle applied on the sheets. The system comprises a processing unit (10*) with at least one magnetic-field-inducing device for orienting the magnetic flakes contained in the ink or varnish vehicle applied on the sheets, which processing unit (10*) is located along a path of the sheets in such a way that the each sheet is brought into contact with or in close proximity to the processing unit (10*) and the at least one magnetic-field-inducing device. The processing unit (10*) comprises a cylinder body (10), the at least one magnetic-field-inducing device being disposed on an outer circumference of the cylinder body (10). The printing press further comprises a first chain conveyor system (31) designed to transport and transfer the sheets to the processing unit (10*) and a second chain conveyor system (32) designed to take away the sheets from the processing unit (10*). The system further comprises at least one drying or curing unit (60) disposed in the vicinity of the cylinder body (10) for drying or curing the ink or varnish vehicle to fix the orientation of the magnetic flakes contained therein while the sheet is still in contact with or in close proximity to the cylinder body (10) and the at least one magnetic-field-inducing device before the sheet is taken away from the at least one magnetic-field-inducing device.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a facility for depositing a film of ordered particles (4) onto a moving substrate (8), the facility being designed to allow the deposition, onto the substrate, of a film of ordered particles discharged through the particle outlet of a transfer area having a first width (L1). According to the invention, the facility further includes an accessory device (100) in the form of a deposition head for blocking said particle outlet and designed to allow the deposition, onto said substrate (38), of a film of ordered particles discharged via an end (62) of a particle transfer channel (56) of said deposition head, said end having a second width (L2) that is strictly smaller than the first width (L1).
