    Abstract: Articles of manufacture, including an apparatus for acoustic wave based atomization, are provided. The apparatus may include a monocrystalline piezoelectric substrate. The monocrystalline piezoelectric substrate may include a surface patterned with at least one wetting region. The monocrystalline piezoelectric substrate may be configured to respond to an electric signal by at least generating acoustic waves including, for example, surface acoustic waves, Bluestein-Gulayev waves, Lamb waves, Love waves, flexural waves, thickness mode vibrations, mixed-mode waves, longitudinal waves, shear mode vibrations, and/or bulk wave vibrations. The acoustic waves may atomizing at least a portion of a material collected within the at least one wetting region to form a mist of the material. Methods for acoustic wave based atomization are also provided.

    Abstract: An electronic drive system for a droplet spay generation device of the type having a droplet generator including a perforate membrane driven by a piezoelectric transducer, the electronic drive system comprising: a programmable micro-controller providing a power supply for converting, in use, a battery supply voltage to power the device; a power amplifier connected to receive electric power from the power supply and supply a drive signal to the piezoelectric generator in use; and wherein the micro-controller is also arranged: to control the operation of the power amplifier, including the drive signal operating frequency at substantially its resonant frequency; to measure the current provided to the power amplifier by the power supply at a plurality of different frequencies; to determine, as the resonant frequency of the droplet generator, the frequency at which the maximum power is consumed by the amplifier, and to set the drive signal operating frequency at the resonant frequency.

    Abstract: In an ultrasonic frequency generating assembly including a frequency generator coupled to a transducer through an output stage, a current measuring circuit is coupled to the output stage for sampling the current therethrough during each frequency burst upon the passage of a predetermined time interval following the onset of the respective frequency burst. The current value measured during a frequency burst is compared with a measured current value from an immediately preceding burst, the frequency output of the frequency generator being modified in accordance with the results of the comparison. The compared current values are stored in respective memories, the most recently measured current value being transferred from one memory to the other upon the termination of the comparison. A new current value is then loaded into the first memory.

    Abstract: A drive circuit for an ultrasonic atomizer comprising a switching mode power driver circuit and an oscillator circuit to drive the power driver circuit with a signal proportional to the phase response of the atomizer's transducer element so as to fix the frequency of the power delivered to the atomizer at the frequency of the transducer.
