Abstract:
A perfluoropolyether, a composition comprising the perfluoropolyether, a process for producing the perfluoropolyether, and a process for improving the thermostability of grease or lubricant are provided. The perfluoropolyether comprises perfluoroalkyl radical end groups in which the radical has at least 3 carbon atoms per radical and is substantially free of perfluoromethyl and perfluoroethyl end groups. The process for producing the perfluoropolyether can comprise (1) contacting a perfluoro acid halide, a C2- to C4-substituted ethyl epoxide, or a C3null fluoroketone with a metal halide to produce an alkoxide; (2) contacting the alkoxide with either hexafluoropropylene oxide or tetrafluorooxetane to produce a second acid halide; (3) esterifying the second acid halide to an ester; (4) reducing the ester to its corresponding alcohol; (5) converting the alcohol with a base to a salt form; (6) contacting the salt form with a C3 or higher olefin to produce a fluoropolyether; and (7) fluorinating the fluoropolyether. The process for improving the thermostability of a grease or lubricant comprises combining the grease or lubricant with the composition.

A composition that can be used as lubricant for high electric field including spark plug boots is disclosed. The composition comprises, or is produced by combining, a halogenated oil such as a perfluoropolyether, a polytrichlorofluoroethylene, a fluorosilicone, or combinations of two or more thereof; a basic thickener; and optionally an additional thickener in which the basic thickener is a metal hydroxide, a metal salt, an ammonium salt, or combinations of two or more thereof. The optional additional thickener is polytetrafluoroethylene, talc, silica, clay, boron nitride, metal soaps, titanium dioxide, polydimethylsiloxane, polyurea, polyurethane, or combinations of two or more thereof. Also provided is a spark plug boot that comprises the composition applied thereto.
Abstract:
The invention provides composites of organic polymeric compositions including a matrix of an organic polymer and a filler distributed throughout the matrix, the flier being present in the matrix substantially as separate particles, each about the fundamental particle size of the filler. The fillers are unique mixed metal hydroxide compositions that are obtainable in sub-micron size particles. These particles are layered and have a BET specific surface area in excess of about 100 m.sup.2 /g. An anion of the particulates is selected to be compatible with the organic polymer thereby providing ease of dispersion of the filler particles throughout the polymer matrix.
