Abstract:
Disclosed are improved abrasion-resistant plasma coatings adapted to be coated onto substrates including polymeric substrates, glass, and metal. The method for plasma coating the substrates comprises restricting the monomer to be a silane, disiloxane, silazane, or disilazane which is substituted with at least one alkoxy group per silicon atom wherein the alkoxy group is selected from methoxy groups, ethoxy groups, and mixtures thereof. The plasma coating is applied under plasma coating conditions for a time adequate to form an abrasion-resistant coating having sufficient thickness so as to possess a Taber abrasion resistance of less than 10% haze development after 100 cycles. Abrasion resistance of some disclosed coatings is less than about 5% development after 1,000 cycles.
Abstract:
An improved release medium is disclosed for use in the production of decorative laminates by both low or high pressure consolidation. The release medium comprises a self-sustaining release sheet having at least one of its surfaces coated with a composition comprised of mineral particles dispersed in a resinous matrix. The release medium may be used to apply an abrasion-resistant coating to the surface of a decorative laminate during production of the laminate by pressure consolidation.
Abstract:
This invention encompasses a high solids, solvent-based, thermosetting composition having the necessary hardness and flexibility that make it an effective coating for both elastomeric and hard metal substrates. The composition comprises a polyester-urethane polyol and a curing agent such as an aminoplast.
Abstract:
A method of providing a stone chip-resistant finish to the undersurface of an automobile is disclosed in which the undersurface is coated with a cationically initiated liquid mixture of cationically curable polyepoxide, polyhydric alcohol, and a photoinitiator for an ultraviolet-activated cationic cure. The liquid mixture is applied at a resin solids content of at least about 50% and in a thickness to provide a cured coating of at least about 2 mils thick, and the wet coating is cured by exposing it to ultraviolet light. The automobile undersurface is desirably primed with a cross-linked amine-functional polymer primer, and the coating includes from 1% to 8% of a finely divided silica which prevents running but does not interfere with the ultraviolet cure.
Abstract:
An item to be exposed to flue gas, especially a heat exchanger (10) to recover additional heat and in which condensation will form, is given a protective coating of thermosetting synthetic resin to prevent attack by acid in the condensation. The coating is preferably applied by dipping into a heat-curable paint, drying the paint under moderate heat while rotating about two axes to prevent "solvent wash" and to ensure that no localised thinning of the coating can occur, then stoving, preferably also under rotation, to produce a finished hard coating of synthetic resin.
Abstract:
Bubble migration from a surface of a container or other substrate into a polyorganosiloxane gel that is in contact with the surface can be substantially eliminated by coating the surface with a liquid composition comprising an organohydrogensiloxane containing at least three siliconbonded hydrogen atoms per molecule. The liquid composition is covered with a layer of uncured silicone rubber that is curable by hydrosilation reaction in addition to being compatible with and adherent to the polyorganosiloxane gel. The gel is then placed over the uncured silicone rubber, after which the rubber and gel are concurrently cured. The cured silicone rubber exhibits a durometer hardness value of at least 10 on the Shore A scale, and the layer of silicone rubber is at least 3 mm. thick.
