    Abstract: Disclosed is a cooling element for location in a refractory lined hearth of a direct smelting vessel below solids injection lances in the smelting vessel. The cooling element includes a hollow open-backed shell structure with a water cooled base, top, front and side walls formed integrally in a cast structure. The cooling element has a shape adapted for co-location with other of the cooling elements in the hearth to form a circular ring cooler with the water cooled side walls of the cooling elements providing water cooling of clearance gaps between adjacent cooling elements. A direct smelting vessel incorporating the cooling element is also claimed.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus for injecting gas into a vessel. The apparatus may include a 5 gas flow duct and a central body within a forward end region of the duct. The central body and the gas flow duct form an annular nozzle for the discharge of gas from the duct. A plurality of flow directing vanes are disposed about the central body to impart swirl to a gas flow 10 through the nozzle. The flow directing vanes have substantially straight leading end portions radiating outwardly from the central body and extending along the duct. The vanes also have substantially helical trailing end portions extending helically about the central body 15 toward the front end of the duct and transition portions joining the leading end portions to the trailing end portions. The transition portions are shaped so as to merge smoothly with both the leading end portions and the trailing end portions and to smoothly and progressively 20 change shape between them.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for crushing material, particularly mined material, is disclosed. In one embodiment two or more pairs (3,7) of crushing rolls successively crush mined material. The pairs of crushing rolls are arranged and operated so that an upstream pair (3) of rolls produces a feed, preferably a pressurised feed, for a downstream pair (7) of rolls. In another embodiment, at least an upstream pair (3) of rolls is driven intermittently, for example by means of a stepping motor to provide stepped rotational movement of the rolls.

    Abstract: A gravity gradiometer is disclosed which has a sensor in the form of bars (41 and 42) which are supported on a mounting (5) which has a first mount section (10) and a second mount section (20). A first flexure web (33) pivotally couples the first and second mount sections about first axis. The second mount has first part (25), a second part (26) and a third part (27). The parts (25 and 26) are connected by second flexure web (37) and the parts (26 and 27) are connected by third flexure web (35). The bars (41 and 42) are located in housings (45 and 47) and form a monolithic structure with the housings (45 and 47) respectively. The housings (45 and 47) are connected to opposite sides of the second mount section (20). The bars (41 and 42) are connected to their respective housings by flexure webs (59).

    Abstract: A direct smelting plant for producing molten metal from a metalliferous feed material using a molten bath based direct smelting process is disclosed. The plant includes a gas delivery duct assembly extending from a gas supply location away from the vessel to deliver oxygen-containing gas to gas injection lances extending into a direct smelting vessel. The gas delivery duct assembly includes a single gas delivery main connected to the gas injection lances to supply oxygen-containing gas to the gas injection lances. The gas delivery main is located at a height above a lower half of the vessel.

    Abstract: A gravity gradiometer and method for forming a pivot flexure web for a gradiometer is disclosed. The gradiometer has measurement bars 41, 43 supported in housings 45 and 47 and transducers 71 for measuring movement of the bars to provide an indication of the gravity gradient tensor. The bars 41, 43 are mounted on flexure webs. The webs are formed in separate elements to the housing and bars.
