Abstract:
Improved organophilic clay gellants can be prepared by a process wherein the smectite-type clay is subjected to shearing in order to break apart the agglomerates and/or the smectite-type clay can be reacted with organic cation and, possibly organic anion, under dilute reaction conditions. The reaction product is recovered using gentle drying conditions. Depending in large part on its composition, the organophilic clay gellant may be used to thicken a variety of organic compositions. In a preferred aspect, the organophilic clay gellant can be directly added to polyester compositions in order to efficiently and effectively increase the viscosity thereof or can be first formed into a pregel under low shear conditions to yield even higher efficiencies.
Abstract:
Grease compositions, wherein the grease is thickened with a metal hydroxy-containing soap grease thickener are provided. Another essential ingredient of the composition is a borated hydrocarbyl alcohol, and it may optionally contain phosphorus and sulfur moieties.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a dry process for the production of an organophilic clay for use in the thickening of fluids such as oil base drilling muds, paints, lubricants and the like. The process comprises adding a mixture of melted organic ammonium salts to a dry clay in a blending apparatus and vigorously blending the materials to react by ion exchange to form the organophilic ammonium salts of the clay.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods of preparing organophilic clay suspending agents having enhanced dispersibility in oleaginous liquids, the organophilic clay containing suspending agents, and methods of increasing the viscosity of oleaginous liquids utilizing these suspending agents. The suspending agents are of particular use in mineral oil based invert emulsion drilling fluids.
Abstract:
A light colored, open gear lubricating grease is formed from:a lubricating base oila clay thickenera combination of a polymer, preferably atactic polypropylene, and a particulate mineral, preferably zinc oxide, as tactifier and filler, andand alkali metal borate as EP additive. The ratio of polymer to mineral, may be from 1.5:1 to 1:1.5. An aromatic disulphide, preferably dibenzyl disulphide, may also be present as an EP additive and, if so, the wt. ratio of borate to disulphide may be from 5:1 to 7:1.
