Abstract: An oxygen catheter for veterinary patients includes an integrated catheter, cannula or vessel having integrated lumens for both oxygen and anesthetic such as lidocaine. The oxygen lumen extends into the trachea of the veterinary patient, often a canine, for respiratory aid. The anesthetic lumen is integrated into the same catheter as the oxygen, and terminates prior to the oxygen lumen for administering an anesthetic such as lidocaine around the soft palate to ease discomfort of the inserted catheter. The integration of the respiratory and anesthetic vessels allows a lidocaine drip to accompany the catheterized oxygen supply to medicate the tracheal, pharynx and soft palate regions from the inserted catheter along the path of the oxygen lumen to ease patient discomfort and anxiety for effective respiratory treatment while avoiding more invasive and expensive measures.

Abstract: A fiber optic based particle manipulation system employs one or more optical fibers for emanating a refracted optical manipulation signal directed at a target particle for fixing or manipulating the particle for examination, research and manufacturing. A target particle may be a living cell or inanimate sample or compound of matter. An alignment linkage controls optical fibers carrying the manipulation signal for focusing one or more manipulation signals on the target particle. Manipulated particles occupy a fluid medium of either liquid or gas, and are responsive to the manipulation signal based on both photon bombardment and temperature differential from photon contact. The temperature differential is based on surface properties of the target particle, as smooth particles tend to exhibit a greater thermal differential for stronger displacement forces driving or affecting the target particle.

Abstract: Catalyst composition and parameters for catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass to bio-oil fuels target municipal solid waste (MSW) rather than lignin rich plant waste typically sought for bio-oil production. An HTL (Hydrothermal Liquefaction) reactor generates bio-fuel from municipal solid waste (MSW), including receiving, in the HTL reactor, non-lignin based waste from a municipal processing stream, and adding a solvent for extracting sugars from green waste components of the municipal processing stream. The reactor extracts a liquid from the received waste, and converts water soluble products in the liquid into oil soluble products via C—C (carbon-to-carbon) coupling reactions. A catalyst added to the resulting aqueous stream recovers a beneficial oil product, and is optimized by tuning acid and base sites on the solid catalyst.

Abstract: A surgical head clamp and robotics platform secures a head of a patient and positions an instrument relative to the head for a medical procedure. The head clamp and robotics platform comprises a planar C-shaped frame for at least partially encircling the head of a patient. An instrument arm is mounted is to a free distal end of one arm member of the frame. The instrument arm extends away from the arm member in a direction transverse to the plane of the frame. The instrument arm includes a base mounted to the arm member for movement along, three degrees of freedom relative to the frame, a proximal portion extending from and pivotally connected to the base, and a distal instrument holder extending from and pivotally connected to the proximal portion. The instrument arm functions to selectively position the instrument in an angular position relative to the head clamp.

Abstract: A needle steering system and apparatus provides active, semi-autonomous control of needle insertion paths while still enabling a clinician ultimate control over needle insertion. A method and system controls the needle path as the needle is inserted by precisely controlling the rotation of the needle as it continuously rotates during insertion. This enables underactuated 2 degree-of-freedom (DOF) control of the direction and the curvature of the needle from a single rotary actuator. Control of the rotary motion is therefore decoupled from the needle insertion. The rotary motion controls steering effort and direction, while the insertion controls needle depth or insertion speed. In one implementation, the proposed method does not require constant velocity insertion, interleaved insertion and rotation, or known insertion position or speed. The insertion may be provided by a robot or other automated method, may be a manual insertion, or may be a teleoperated insertion.

Abstract: An in vitro meat having non-decellularized leaf scaffold and a method for producing an in vitro meat using non-decellularized leaf scaffold are described herein. The method includes preparing a non-decellularized plant leaf and incubating the leaf in a cell culture media to obtain a non-decellularized leaf scaffold; seeding the leaf scaffold with a population of muscle cells to obtain a leaf scaffold adhered population of muscle cells; and growing the leaf scaffold adhered population of muscle cells in cell culture media thereby obtaining the in vitro meat.

Abstract: A petroleum refining method for upgrading petroleum products improves the efficiency and reduces the costs of upgrading oils, such as lipids, bitumen, crude oil, fracking oils, synthetic oils, and other feeds, to produce useful fuels and chemical precursor streams. Usage of a specific type of zeolite (ZSM-5) catalyst, supercritical water to control coke formation, and a specific response to phase behavior and other catalytic effects optimize the process. A prescribed set of reactor conditions employing supercritical water increases activity of the catalyst in industrial reactions.

Abstract: Recovery of scandium from mined red mud includes adding an acid to a quantity of red mud for converting oxides in the red mud, and roasting the quantity of red mud for decomposing compounds having low thermal stability, typically iron and titanium. Water is added to the roasted red mud for leaching the converted oxides into a leach liquor mixture including scandium and other dissolved rare earths, and the leach liquor mixture is agitated by sonication or ball milling to increase an exposed surface area of red mud particles in the leach liquor. PH of the leach liquor is adjusted to precipitate the rare earths while leaving the scandium in solution in the leach liquor, followed by precipitating the separated scandium oxalate remaining in the leach liquor by reducing the pH and adding oxalic acid. Precipitated scandium oxalate may then be filtered from the leach liquor.
