Abstract:
The present invention provides a method (900) and device (100) in multimedia communication systems for efficiently segmenting information bitstreams from multiple media sources into variable length packets, and multiplexing and sending the packets to a shared communication link with low delay and low overhead. The packet segmentation and multiplexing are performed dynamically based on fullness of a set of information buffers that contain the information bitstreams to be transmitted, and delay-sensitivity of each information bitstream. The multi-discipline queuing scheme has been developed in this invention to control the dynamic packet segmenting and multiplexing process.

An improved land vehicle navigation apparatus (10) and method for automatically planning a recovery route upon detection of a route departure. The land vehicle navigation apparatus (10) comprises a route planner (22) for planning an original route (88) for a land vehicle (2), via fixed road paths, wherein the original route includes multiple route segments, a start location, and at least one destination, including an original destination, and a position determiner (14) for determining an estimated current position of the land vehicle (2) and route storage for storing the original route segments into memory (24). The improvement comprises an automatic recovery route planner (56) for automatically planning a recovery route to the original route (88) upon detecting a route departure using recovery route planning criteria including designating at least some of the stored original route segments as a destination thereby eliminating the need for planning a completely new route and reducing recovery route planning time.

A system polynomial is determined using a plurality of system I/O data, wherein the system polynomial expresses the system output (98) in terms of the system input (96), and wherein the system polynomial has r' terms including at least one linear term and at least one nonlinear term, the r' terms found using a regression subsets technique. A control polynomial (90) is determined, the control polynomial (90) having at least one cancellation term and at least one control term, the at least one cancellation term calculated to cancel the at least one nonlinear term of the system polynomial, and the at least one control term calculated to control the at least one linear term of the system polynomial. A control output (92) signal is generated based on the control polynomial (90) and the control input signal (94).

Abstract:
The present invention is a method (100) and apparatus (200) for adaptive entropy encoding/decoding of a plurality of quantized transform coefficients in a video/image compression system. For encoding, first, a predetermined number of quantized transform coefficients are received in a predetermined order, giving a generally decreasing average power. Then the quantized transform coefficients are parsed into a plurality of coefficient groups. When the last coefficient group comprises all zero quantized coefficients, it is discarded. The coefficient groups are then converted into a plurality of parameter sets in the predetermined order. A current parameter set is obtained from the parameter sets in the reverse order of the predetermined order. A current entropy encoder is selected adaptively based on the previously selected entropy encoder and the previous parameter set. The current parameter set is encoded by the current entropy encoder to provide entropy encoded information bits.
Abstract:
A trunked wireless communication system (200) includes communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250), communication signal voters (214, 215), and a signal switch (216) intercoupled between the communication signal voters (214, 215) and the communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250). Each of the communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250) has selective trunked access to a signal voter (214, 215), thus providing flexibility in the operation of the wireless communication system (200). In a particular operation mode, the wireless communication system (200) can selectively route signals between the voters (214, 215) and communication sites (220, 230, 240, 250) to promote efficient reuse of communication resources.
Abstract:
A common communications system provides information regarding the availability of other communication systems within the common communications system coverage area to a generic, programmable subscriber unit. The subscriber unit then selects one of the communications systems and receives enabling programming from the communication system. The enabling programming permits the subscriber unit to configure itself to operate on the selected communication system.
Abstract:
In a satellite communication system (10), communication channels are dynamically assigned in real-time based on actual demand using a regionalized channel assignment and reuse scheme. The tradeoff between system capacity and channel interference is optimized through the use of interlocking local regions (81, 82, 83). Satellite communication stations (12) within a radio line-of-sight of each other make up each local region. The communication stations of a local region change as the communication stations move through orbital positions. Channel reuse rules are adapted to system load and demand for services. Each communication station (12) establishes its local region and notifies the other communication stations within its local region whenever it assigns a communication channel to a subscriber unit. Channel assignments within each local region are maintained locally by the defining communication station.
Abstract:
A selective call receiver (100) includes a radio frequency amplifier (202) having an output power level that is controllable. A radio frequency level sensor (500) generates a sensor output signal in response to an input signal level received at the radio frequency amplifier (202). The sensor output signal is conditioned by a filter (401, 402) to generate a control signal representing an effective value of the input signal level received at the radio frequency amplifier (202). The control signal is then coupled to an amplifier output power level adjustment circuit (403) that operates to adjust a power gain of the radio frequency amplifier (202) in an unconditionally stable feed-forward manner such that the output power level remains substantially constant when the input signal level sensed by the radio frequency level sensor (500) substantially reaches or exceeds a predetermined signal overload level.
