Abstract:
A method and system for identifying spoken sounds in continuous speech by using a voting window provides improved performance in a speech-recognition system. In a speech-recognition system (50) having a plurality of classifiers (30-42), a voting window includes a sequence of outputs from each of the classifiers. At each interval in the voting window, the outputs are compared to determine a winning output. A spoken sound is identified by determining which classifier (30-42) generates the greatest number of winning outputs in the voting window.
Abstract:
In a TDM wireless communication system (100), a central controller (104) monitors the transfer of a message (108) in order to determine a system grade of service. Based on the system grade of service, the central controller dynamically allocates a lesser or greater number of wireless communication resources (105). Alternatively, a communication unit (101) can directly request additional wireless communication resources.
Abstract:
A thermal sensing polymeric device (110) such as a capacitor is fabricated from a layer of a copolymeric material (112) including polyvinylidene fluoride and a fluorinated ethylene. The fluorinated ethylene may be selected from the group including trifluoroethylene and tetrafluoroethylene. The thermal sensing polymeric device may be a capacitor fabricated of polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene copolymeric material. In such an application, the capacitor device exhibits a change in capacitance as the temperature to which the device is exposed is changed. Specifically, as the temperature of the polymeric material crosses a threshold transition temperature, a substantial change in its capacitance is observed.

A piezoelectric resonator (10) with an attenuated spurious response. The resonator (10) includes a piezoelectric crystal plate (12) having opposite surfaces (14, 16), an electrode (18, 24) positioned in overlying relationship on each of the opposite surfaces (14, 16), the electrodes (18, 24) being substantially coextensive and opposite, and providing a primary frequency mode of operation and spurious modes upon suitable energization, and a number of mass loading structures (34) on at least one of the surfaces (14, 16) substantially surrounding at least one of the electrodes (18, 24).
Abstract:
A method and system for identifying boundaries of characters in handwritten text by classifying segment strokes provides improved performance in a handwriting recognition system. A segment stroke is a portion of handwritten text which includes a boundary between two characters. The segment stroke is recognized by the same method used to recognize characters. Recognition of a segment stroke is accomplished by training a learning machine to act as a classifier (208) which implements a discriminant function based on a polynomial expansion.
Abstract:
An interface card (10) for use with a personal communicator is provided as well as a method of use therefor. An electronic camera (12) is used to capture a plurality of image data. The image data is transferred to the personal communicator by an interface circuit (14).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for packet alignment in a simulcast system includes a communications controller (310) having a vocoder and an input/output (I/O) processor (313) controlling the vocoder (311), the I/O processor having a timing alignment control (315) and a packet counter (314) for inserting timing alignment tags in voice/data packets and adjusting packet numbering and timing based on alignment request from a master radio communication unit. The communications controller is coupled to radio communication units (330, 340, 350), each having a packet buffer (331) and an alignment processor (332) which includes a packet number detector (333) for detecting the transmission timing tag and sending a request for a packet numbering adjustment to the communications controller and a timing alignment detector (334) for comparing a receive time of the first information packet and a predetermined preferential receive time and for sending a timing alignment request to the communications controller.
Abstract:
A communication device (100) includes first (104) and second (108) mixers for producing first in-phase and quadrature phase component, respectively. Additional zero-crossing points are efficiently generated by adding and subtracting the in-phase and quadrature components in a summer (116) and a subtractor (118), respectively. The additional zero-crossing points are generated by the formation of second in-phase and quadrature components. A zero-crossing detector (128) is used for detecting zero crossings using the first and second in-phase components and the first and second quadrature phase components.
Abstract:
A multilayer printed circuit board (100) includes a plurality of layers (101, 102, 104, 106, 108 and 110). Located within intermediate layer (106) is an inductor (200) which is shielded by top layer ground plane (202) and bottom layer ground plane (204). In another embodiment of the present invention, the inductor (200) can have its inductance adjusted by way of an inductance adjustement runner (316, 318) or by an electronic inductance adjustement device (408).
Abstract:
A radio communications device is arranged to communicate time division signals (60 and 70) over first (40) and second (50) time discontinuous systems having first and second frame structures respectively. Switching means (120) switches between communicating signals (60) over the first system (40) during time periods of the first frame structure and communicating signals (70) over the second system (50) during time periods of the second frame structure. Hence over a given period of time the device simultaneously communicates time division signals over the first (40) and second (50) systems.
