Abstract:
This disclosure relates to lubricating engines using formulated lubricating oils to reduce wear and improve engine fuel efficiency. The formulated lubricating oils contain a major amount of a nonpolar lubricating oil base stock and a minor amount of one or more polar lubricating oil additives. The one or more polar lubricating oil additives include swollen inverse micelles dispersed in the nonpolar lubricating oil base stock. The swollen inverse micelles include (i) a liquid polar core containing a polar solvent and one or more polar lubricating oil additives having solubility in the polar solvent, and (ii) a layer of liquid surfactant molecules enclosing the liquid polar core in which polar heads of the liquid surfactant molecules are oriented towards the liquid polar core. A method of improving solubility of polar lubricating oil additives in a nonpolar lubricating oil base stock is also provided.
Abstract:
A friction control composition having high and positive frictional properties for sliding steel surfaces includes a water insoluble hydrocarbon that enables a reduced water content, a rheological additive, a freezing point depressant, a friction modifier, and a lubricant.
Abstract:
An overbased calcium sulfonate grease composition comprising a reduced amount of overbased calcium sulfonate, added calcium carbonate, base oil, one or more converting agents, and one or more complexing acids if a complex grease is desired. The calcium sulfonate grease composition improves thickener yield and expected high temperature utility as demonstrated by dropping point. The calcium carbonate may be used to react with complexing acids when making a complex grease, such that the addition of calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide is not required. A method of making the composition comprising the steps of mixing the overbased calcium sulfonate and base oil, adding the calcium carbonate, adding one or more converting agents, and adding one or more complexing acids. All or a portion of one or more of the complexing acids may be added with or prior to the one or more converting agents.
Abstract:
The object of the invention is a traction sheave elevator and a rope (3) that contains metal as a load-bearing material, such as the suspension rope of an elevator, which rope comprises at least one or more strands (7) laid from metal wires (9) and which rope (3) is lubricated with a lubricant (8). Abstract:
Systems and methods for the synthesis of lubricant-containing microcapsules are disclosed. Embodiments of composite nickel and copper coatings containing capsules with liquid lubricating oil cores are also disclosed. In certain embodiments, microcapsules can be incorporated into a metal plating solution to perform composite electrodeposition to obtain self lubricant metallic coatings. In some embodiments, much lower friction coefficient (-0.8) and far better wear resistance was obtained with the copper/microcapsules composite.
Abstract:
The present invention provides the use of a lubricating composition comprising: - a base oil; and - one or more poly(hydroxycarboxylic acid) amide salt derivatives having formula (III): [Y-CO[O-A-CO] n -Z-R+] m pX q- (III) wherein Y is hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, A is a divalent optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, n is from 1 to 100, preferably from 1 to 10, m is from 1 to 4, q is from 1 to 4 and p is an integer such that pq = m, Z is an optionally substituted divalent bridging group which is attached to the carbonyl group through a nitrogen atom, R + is an ammonium group and X q- is an anion; for improving one or more of friction reduction and anti- wear properties, preferably in an internal combustion engine.
Abstract:
A composition that includes solid lubricant nanoparticles and an organic medium is disclosed. Also disclosed are nanoparticles that include layered materials. A method of producing a nanoparticle by milling layered materials is provided. Also disclosed is a method of making a lubricant, the method including milling layered materials to form nanoparticles and incorporating the nanoparticles into a base to form a lubricant.
Abstract:
A method of reducing the torque of a drill string used in drilling a subterranean well that includes injecting into the drilling fluid a composition including a base fluid and a polymer coated colloidal solid material. The polymer coated colloidal solid material includes: a solid particle having an weight average particle diameter (d 50 ) of less than ten microns, and a polymeric dispersing agent coated onto the surface of the solid particle during the cominution (i.e. grinding) process utilized to make the colloidal particles. The polymeric dispersing agent may be a water soluble polymer having a molecular weight of at least 2000 Daltons. The solid particulate material may be selected from materials having of specific gravity of at least 2.68 and preferably the solid particulate material may be selected from barium sulfate (barite), calcium carbonate, dolomite, ilmenite, hematite, olivine, siderite, strontium sulfate, combinations and mixtures of these and other similar solids that should be apparent to one of skill in the art.
