Abstract: 1,251,866. De-magnetizing cathode-ray tube apparatus. RCA CORPORATION. 7 March, 1969 [11 March, 1968], No. 12151/69. Heading H4T. In an arrangement for degaussing television apparatus, specifically the shadow-mask tube of a colour television receiver, the receiver employing a cascaded voltage doubler type of rectifier circuit for producing the normal D.C. operating voltages, the capacitor portion of the first stage is formed as two parallel paths comprising capacitors 31, 41 (Fig. 1) each in series with a thermistor 33, 43 one of which, specifically 43, is shunted by the series arrangement of a voltage dependent resistor (VDR) 51 and a de-gaussing coil 53. The operation is as follows. On switching-on, initially, A.C., one pole of which is grounded, is supplied via switch 13 to, inter-alia, the rectifier circuit and due to the high resistance of the thermistors when cold the major part of the charging current flows in the shunt path including the coil 53. As the thermistors heat up the falling resistance results in a reduction of the current flow in the coil 53 and a reduction in the voltage applied to the VDR 51 so that the resistance of the latter increases. The A.C. flowing in coil 53 is thus gradually reduced to zero to effect the required de-gaussing at which point the resistance of the series arrangement of the coil 53 and the VDR 51 has a high value so that negligible current flows therethrough and the charging current now flows through thermistor 43 (and through thermistor 33 which now has a low resistance). By dividing the capacitor portion of the first stage of the rectifier into two parallel paths the capacitor operative in the de-gaussing circuit, capacitor 41, may be given a capacitance value of the same order as that of the second stage capacitor 73 so that current pulses of the same magnitude flow during each half-cycle of the A.C. input. This arrangement avoids undesirable spot shift effects which the use of an asymmetrical charging current would give rise to whilst allowing the use of capacitance values resulting in maximum efficiency and economy in the design of the voltage doubler rectifier circuit. The two thermistors should be in close thermal contact and may be replaced by a three-terminal device containing two thermistors (Fig. 2, not shown). The filament transformer 15, which has a tap TH for use under condition of high line voltage so that correct filament voltages are available, supplies the filament of the picture tube 19 via the secondary winding TS and filaments of the damper tube in the horizontal deflection circuit and the series string connected filaments of the remaining tubes via taps, DF and FS respectively.

Abstract: One type of video disc record reproducing system senses the capacitance between a stylus and the disc record to reconstruct the video information. The stylus includes a thin conductive element electrode and rides on the record, which is rotated at high speeds. The record, which includes a conductive layer covered with a thin dielectric material, is susceptible to accumulating an electric charge. Disposing a pickup device such as a stylus in proximate or contacting relation with such a charged record disc can produce a destructive discharge of the record through the pickup device which results in damage to the stylus. To minimize the occurence of such damage, the disc record is contacted by means which provide a conductive path through the record spindle to a point of reference potential for the system. In one arrangement, the spindle has a slide bar spring biased to be within the periphery of the spindle when the spindle is stationary. Upon rotation of the spindle, the bar extends out of the spindle to contact the record surface. In a further arrangement, a grounding flipper is pivotally mounted in the spindle. The flipper passes through the record hole and is spring biased to bear against the record surface.

Abstract: In a color television display system in which a plurality of horizontal in-line electron beams are directed toward color phosphor elements of a color picture tube, substantial convergence of the beams at all points on a scanned raster is achieved by transversely positioning the deflection yoke relative to the picture tube while maintaining substantial parallelism between the central longitudinal axes of the yoke and picture tube.

Abstract: A metal sheet is embossed by a special embossing tool to provide regions in the sheet of minimum thickness at the intended aperture locations thereon. Following embossing, the sheet is shaped into a desired mask contour and the embossed side of the sheet is coated with a stop-off substance to prevent subsequent removal of material from that side. The regions of minimum thickness are then removed, such as by etching the uncoated side of the sheet, to provide the apertures.

Abstract: 1,198,206. Television.R.C.A. CORPORATION. 29 May, 1968 [29 May, 1967], No. 25642/68. Heading H4F. An automatic chroma control (ACC) circuit for a colour TV receiver comprises means for deriving D.C. voltage components from the input and output of a colour-synchronizing- burst gate amplifier and means for controlling the gain of a chrominance amplifier in response to a predetermined combination of the said voltage components. The voltage component from the output of the burst gate amplifier is in practice derived at the grid of a phase locked colour reference oscillator to which the burst signals are applied via a narrow band filter which incidently removes any noise signals. Noise voltages present at the input to the burst gate amplifier, however, are rectified by the grid-cathode diode and produce a negative bias voltage which reduces the gain of the burst gate amplifier. The resulting reduction in the amplitude of the burst voltage applied to the oscillator causes the ACC circuit to increase the gain of the chrominance amplifier and produces an undesired increase in the signals applied to the colour demodulator. This error is minimized by applying the noise generated D.C. voltage component at the input to the burst gate amplifier to the ACC circuit to offset the variation in the voltage derived at the output of the burst gate oscillator. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, a closed loop ACC arrangement identical to that described in Specification 1,198,207 in which a D.C. voltage component appearing at the grid of a colour reference oscillator 18 is applied via resistor 132 to an ACC circuit 28 comprising a currentcontrolled amplifier the output of which is applied as bias to a chrominance amplifier 12, is modified by connecting the earthy-end of the grid-leak resistor 94 of the burst gate amplifier 14 to the input of the current controlled amplifier. Grid-leak resistor 49 may be selected in value so that the increase in current flowing through it from an increased negative D.C. voltage component at the grid of the burst gate amplifier 14 due to noise compensates for the reduction in the current in grid-leak resistor 132 due to the resulting decrease in the amplitude of the burst signals applied to the oscillator. A second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises an open loop ACC arrangement in which the chrominance amplifier (12) is outside the ACC loop. The grid-leaks of the burst gate amplifier (14) and the reference oscillator (18) are connected directly to ground and the D.C. voltage components at the grids of these valves are applied to the input of a voltage amplifier which provides a bias voltage to control the gain of the chrominance amplifier (12).
