Abstract: The present invention relates to a composition comprising a Codium platylobium extract as an active ingredient to prevent hair loss or improve hair growth. According to the present invention, the composition comprising the Codium platylobium extract as an active ingredient to prevent hair loss or improve hair growth has an effect of inhibiting activation of 5α-reductase. Therefore, the composition of the present invention can usefully be used as a raw material for functional cosmetics, medicine, and food to prevent hair loss and improve hair growth; and has the advantage of being safe for a long-term usage since the composition is made from natural substances.

The composition according to the present invention has effects in the inhibition of 5α-reductase activity, the proliferation of NIH3T3 fibroblasts, and the growth and proliferation of dermal papilla cells playing an important role in the hair growth. Therefore, the composition of the present invention can be useful as a raw material for functional cosmetics, medicines, and foods for preventing hair loss or improving hair growth. Further, since the composition of the present invention is a natural material, it is safe in spite of the long-term use thereof.
