Abstract: Abstract of the Disclosure An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels and having display control circuitry that controls the operation of the display. The display control circuitry may adaptively adjust the display 5 output based on ambient lighting conditions. For example, in cooler ambient lighting conditions such as those dominated by daylight, the display may display neutral colors using a relatively cool white. When the display is operated in warmer ambient lighting conditions such as those 10 dominated by indoor light sources, the display may display neutral colors using a relatively warm white. Adapting to the ambient lighting conditions may ensure that the user does not perceive color shifts on the display as the user's vision chromatically adapts to different ambient lighting 15 conditions. Adaptively adjusting images in this way can also have beneficial effects on the human circadian rhythm by displaying warmer colors in the evening.

Abstract: Abstract of the Disclosure An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels and having display control circuitry that controls the operation of the display. The display control circuitry may operate the display in 5 different modes. In a paper mode, display control circuitry may use stored spectral reflectance data to adjust display colors such that the colors appear as they would on a printed sheet of paper. In a low light mode when the ambient light level is below a threshold, the light emitted 10 from the display may be adjusted to mimic the appearance of an incandescent light source. In a bright light mode when the ambient light level exceeds a threshold, the light emitted from the display may be adjusted to maximize readability in bright light. The target white point of the 15 display may be adjusted based on which mode the display is operating in.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices are provided for maintaining a target white point on a light emitting diode (LED) based backlight. In one embodiment, the backlight may include two or more groups of LEDs, each driven at a respective driving strength. Each group may include LEDs of a different chromaticity, and the respective driving strengths may be adjusted, for example, by varying the duty cycles, to maintain the target white point. To ensure that the white point may be maintained over an operational temperature range of the backlight, the LEDs may be selected so that the chromaticities of each group of LEDs are separated by at least a minimum chromaticity difference. Further, the LEDs may be selected so that at the equilibrium temperature of the backlight, the LEDs may produce the target white point when driven at substantially equal driving strengths.

Abstract: An electronic device comprising: one or more input structures; a storage structure capable of storing one or more executable routines; a processor capable of receiving inputs from the one or more input structures and of executing the one or more executable routines; and a liquid crystal display (LCD) capable of displaying an output of the processor, wherein the LCD includes: a liquid crystal display panel; and an edge-lit backlight unit 104 configured to output light to the liquid crystal display panel, the backlight unit including: a light guiding plate106; a light source 108 adjacent a lateral edge of the light guiding plate; and a turning film 120 disposed over the light guiding plate, the turning film including a plurality of prisms 118 on a surface of the turning film facing the light guiding plate, wherein the plurality of prisms includes prisms having apex angles between approximately fifty and sixty-five degrees; wherein the light guiding plate is configured to receive light from the light source at the lateral edge such that the received light propagates through the light guiding plate and is redirected by lenses of the light guiding plate to emit light to the turning film, and wherein light emitted from an emission surface of the light guiding plate is distributed within a primary distribution range of thirty-five degrees to eighty-five degrees measured with respect to a normal of an emission surface of the light guide and at a peak incident angle between fifty-seven degrees and sixty-three degrees with respect to the normal from the light guide.
