Abstract: A multi-touch capacitive touch sensor panel can be created using a substrate with column and row traces formed on either side of the substrate. To shield the column (sense) traces from the effects of capacitive coupling from a modulated Vcom layer in an adjacent liquid crystal display (LCD) or any source of capacitive coupling, the row traces can be widened to shield the column traces, and the row traces can be placed closer to the LCD. In particular, the rows can be widened so that there is spacing of about 30 microns between adjacent row traces. In this manner, the row traces can serve the dual functions of driving the touch sensor panel, and also the function of shielding the more sensitive column (sense) traces from the effects of capacitive coupling.

Each mixer in the sense channel can utilize a circuit capable generating a demodulation frequency of a particular frequency. At each of multiple steps, various phases of one or more selected frequencies can be used to simultaneously stimulate the rows of the touch sensor panel, and the one or more mixers in each sense channel can be configured to demodulate the signal received from the column connected to each sense channel using the one or more selected frequencies. After all steps have been completed, the demodulated signals from the one or more mixers can be used in calculations to determine an image of touch for the touch sensor panel at each of the one or more frequencies.

Abstract: A touch panel, comprises a plurality of transparent conductive material traces 410, 420 on a first surface of the touch panel; a plurality of metal traces 415a connected to the plurality of transparent conductive material traces; a plurality of low pass filters, each low pass filter comprising: a resistance 416a formed by a transparent conductive material resistor distinct from the plurality of transparent conductive material traces; and a capacitance (840) formed by an input capacitance of capacitance sensing circuitry (850) and a capacitance of a conductor connecting the transparent conductive material resistor to the capacitance sensing circuitry. Each transparent conductive material resistor is connected to at least one of the plurality of metal traces and in an electrical path between the at least one metal trace and the conductor connected to the capacitance sensing circuitry. The metal traces on the surface of the touch screen may be subject to radio-frequency interference (RFI) that can adversely affect the performance of the touch screen. The transparent conductive material resistors inserted within the metal trace paths form low-pass filters reduce the effect of the RFI.
