    Abstract: A multiphase flow meter used in conjunction with an electrical submersibl e pump system in a well bore includes sensors to determine and transmit well bore pressure measurements, including tubing and down hole pressure measure ments. The multiphase flow meter also includes at least one artificial neura l network device to be used for outputting flow characteristics of the well bore. The artificial neural network device is trained to output tubing and d ownhole flow characteristics responsive to multiphase-flow pressure gradient calculations and pump and reservoir models, combined with standard down-hol e pressure, tubing surface pressure readings, and the frequency applied to t he electrical submersible pump motor.

    Abstract: A protection system for an artificial lift device 10 comprises two pumping units 42, 66 that are suspended on a tubing string 16 in a wellbore 12, where the pumping units 42, 66 contact well fluids, whereby the second pumping unit 66 is a back-up unit. The artificial lifting device 10 is provided with a cross-over junction 23 that connects the two pumping units 42, 66. The cross-over junction 23 is provided with a barrier 100 such as an intake barrier or an output barrier that deters the ingress of well fluids, as a result, the artificial lifting device 10 may remain idle and submerged within well fluids for an extended period of time without degradation of the artificial lifting device internals. The intake barrier 100 may include a plug 108, burst disk 110, dissolvable plug 114, spring biassed member 118, or a piston activated sliding sleeve 121, such that the intake barrier may be removed once the artificial lift device 10 is ready for operation.

    Abstract: A three phase power cable is employed to transmit data encoded in a phase-to-phase manner within a high frequency carrier signal transmitted simultaneously with power transmitted from surface equipment to downhole components. The high frequency carrier signal is transmitted on all conductors of the power cable, with the signal carried on at least two phases or conductors modulated between the two conductors to encode data between the two phases. Any modulation technique may be employed. Multiple phase-to-phase signals may be encoded and transmitted between different pairs of the power cable conductors, or the same data may be encoded and transmitted in multiple phase-to-phase signals in either a single-ended or differential manner. The high frequency carrier may be employed to transmit data from sensors downhole to the surface equipment, control signals from the surface equipment to the downhole components, or both.
