Abstract: 4-benzoylisothiazoles have general formula (1), in which the substituents have the following meanings: X stands for oxygen or sulphur; R stands for hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, or for optionally substituted alkoxycarbonyl, aryl, heterocyclyl or hetaryl; R stands for hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkinyl, cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, whereas these radicals may bear one or several halogen, alkyl, alkenyl or alkinyl groups, or R stands for aryl, hetaryl or heterocyclyl; and R stands for alkyl, cycloalkyl or a radical of general formula (2), in which the substituents have the meanings indicated in claim 1. Also disclosed are the salts commonly used in agriculture of the 4-benzoylisothiazoles of general formula (1), a process for preparing the same and their use as herbicides.

L,M = H; 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, 2-6C alkynyl or alkoxy (all optionally substituted by 1-5 halogen or alkoxy); or halogen, CN or NO2; X = O, S, SO or SO2; n = 0-2; R1-R4 = H; 1-6C alkyl, 2-6C alkenyl, 2-6C alkynyl or alkoxy (all optionally substituted by 1-5 halogen or alkoxy); halogen; or phenyl (optionally substituted by one or more of alkyl, H, alkoxy, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, halogen, NO2, CN and alkoxycarbonyl); or R2+R3 form a bond; Q = 1,3-dioxocyclohex-2-yl of formula (a); R5,R6,R8,R10 = H or alkyl; R7 = H; alkyl or 3-4C cycloalkyl (both optionally substituted by 1-3 of halogen, alkylthio and alkoxy); or alkoxy, 1-6C alkoxyalkyl or tetrahydropyran-3- or 4-yl; R9 = H, alkyl or COOR11; or R7+R9 complete a bond or a 3-6 membered carbocyclic ring; R11 = alkyl; unless specified otherwise alkyl moieties have 1-4C. Intermediates of formula (III) are also new. T = Cl, OH or alkoxy.
