Abstract: Dispersiones acuosas de polímeros hidrosolubles de la N-vinilformamida y/o de la N-vinilacetamida, caracterizadas porque las dispersiones contienen, referido a 100 partes en peso de agua, (A) de 5 hasta 80 partes en peso de un polímero hidrosoluble, que contiene unidades de N- vinilformamida y/o de N-vinilacetamida con tamaños de partículas de 50 nm hasta 2 m, y (B) de 1 hasta 50 partes en peso de al menos un dispersante polímero, que se escoge del grupo, consistiendo de carboximetilcelulosa, almidón hidrosoluble, ésteres de almidón, xantogenatos de almidón, acetatos de almidón, dextran, polialquilenglicoles, acetato de polivinilo, polivinilalcohol, polivinilpirrolidona, polivinilpiridina, polietilenimina, polivinilimidazol, polivinilsuccinimida y cloruro polidialildimetilamónico.

Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of N-vinylcarboxamides contain, based on 100 parts of water, (A) from 5 to 80 parts by weight of water-soluble polymer containing N-vinylformamide units and/or N-vinylacetamide units and having particle sizes of from 50 nm to 2 mum and (B) from 1 to 50 parts by weight of at least one polymeric dispersant which is incompatible with the water-soluble polymers (A) in aqueous solution, which dispersions are prepared by polymerizing (A) from 5 to 80 parts by weight of N-vinylformamide and/or N-vinylacetamide, if desired together with other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which form water-soluble polymers therewith, and (B) from 1 to 50 parts by weight of at least one polymeric dispersant which is incompatible with the polymers, formed from the monomers (A), in aqueous solution, in 100 parts by weight of water, at from 30 to 95° C. in the presence of from 0.001 to 5.0% by weight, based on the monomers used, and the aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers are used as drainage aids, flocculants and retention aids and as wet and dry strength agents and as fixing compositions in papermaking.

Abstract: A process for the production of water-soluble or water-swellable cationic polymers by (i) free-radically initiated copolymerization of monomer mixtures in water comprising (a) from 1 to 99% by weight of a cationic monomer or quaternizable monomer, (b) from 1 to 99% by weight of a water-soluble monomer, (c) from 0 to 10% by weight of a bi- or polyfunctional, free-radically copolymerizable monomer, adjusting the amounts (a) to (c) in such a way that the resulting polymer has an overall positive charge, in the presence of 1 to 100% of the amount of a salt which is necessary to saturate the reaction medium with said salt and in the presence of 0,1 to 20 % by weight referred to the weight of the dispersion, of an amphoteric dispersant having an overall negative charge, and (ii) subsequent quaternization of the polymer if the monomer (a) employed is a non-quaternized monomer is disclosed.

Abstract: The preparation of finely divided homopolymers and copolymers of N-vinyl formamide and optionally vinyl amine unit containing polymers comprises radically polymerising N-vinyl formamide and optionally copolymers in a solution of the monomers and optionally hydrolysing to vinyl amine units. The polymerisation uses an organic solvent in which the monomers are poorly soluble but in which the polymer is soluble and takes place in a kneader or fixed bed reactor.
