The invention relates to a method for producing paper, paperboard and cardboard. According to said method, a polymer containing vinylamine units and a polymer anionic compound are added separately to a pulp, the pulp is decked, and the paper products are dried. At least one copolymer is used as a polymer anionic compound, said copolymer being obtained by the copolymerisation of (a) at least one N-vinylcarboxylic acid amide of formula (I) wherein R 1 , R 2 represent H or C1 to C6 alkyl, (b) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monomer containing acid groups and/or the alkali metal, earth alkali metal or ammonium salts thereof, optionally (c) other monoethlenically unsaturated monomers, and optionally (d) compounds comprising at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the molecule.

Disclosed is a method for producing aqueous polyelectrolyte complex dispersions by turbulently mixing aqueous anionic polymer solutions having a minimum charge density of 5 meq/g with aqueous cationic polymer solutions having a charge density of more than 4 meq/g. Also disclosed is the use of the obtained aqueous polyelectrolyte complex dispersions or the polyelectrolyte complexes isolated therefrom as a pulp additive for producing paper having an increased water resistance, as a fixing agent, flocculant and retention agent, dewatering agent for sludges, as an additive for detergents, adhesives, cosmetic products such as shampoos and hair conditioners, coating agents used for leather, textiles, cellulose fibers, cotton, glass, ceramics, and metals, and as a carrier and/or protective colloid for medicaments, agrochemicals, and in human and animal nutrition.

A process for the production of water-soluble or water-swellable cationic polymers by (i) free-radically initiated copolymerization of monomer mixtures in water comprising (a) from 1 to 99% by weight of a cationic monomer or quaternizable monomer, (b) from 1 to 99% by weight of a water-soluble monomer, (c) from 0 to 10% by weight of a bi- or polyfunctional, free-radically copolymerizable monomer, adjusting the amounts (a) to (c) in such a way that the resulting polymer has an overall positive charge, in the presence of 1 to 100% of the amount of a salt which is necessary to saturate the reaction medium with said salt and in the presence of 0,1 to 20 % by weight referred to the weight of the dispersion, of an amphoteric dispersant having an overall negative charge, and (ii) subsequent quaternization of the polymer if the monomer (a) employed is a non-quaternized monomer is disclosed.

A process for the production of paper, board and cardboard by draining a paper stock containing interfering substances in the presence of polymers which contain vinylamine units and which have an average molar mass Mw of at least 1 million, a high-consistency stock first being prepared, at least one polymer containing vinylamine units and having an average molar mass Mw of at least 1 million and a degree of hydrolysis of from 1 to 20 mol % being metered into the high-consistency stock, the high-consistency stock being diluted to a low-consistency stock by adding water, and the low-consistency stock being drained, the polymers being hydrolyzed homo- or copolymers of N-vinylcarboxamides additives for reducing deposits in the wire part, press section and drying section of paper machines.

The invention relates to aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of N- vinyl carboxylic acid amides that contain, as stabilizers, water-soluble, cross-linked graft polymers that can be obtained by the radically initiated polymerization of compounds with at least two ethylenically unsaturated doub le bonds in the presence of polyalkylene glycols. The invention relates to aqueous dispersions of hydrosoluble polymerisates of ethylenically unsaturated anionic monomers obtainable by monomer radical polymerisation in an aqueous medium in the presence of at least one type of stabiliser characterised in that the polymerisation is carried out in the presence of at least one type of hydrosoluble polymer of the following groups: (a) branched polymerisates of vinyl acetate and/or vinyl propionate on polyethylenglycol, polyethylenglycol closed on one or two sides, by terminal groups comprising alkyl, carboxyl or amino groups, copolymerisate of alkylpolyalkylenglycolacrylates or alkylpolyalkylenglycolmethacrylates and acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, polyalkylenglycols, polyethylenglycole closed on one or two sides, by terminal groups comprising alkyl, carboxyl or amino groups; and (b) hydrolysed copolymerisates of vinylalkylethers and maleic anhydride in the form of free carboxyl groups and in the form of salts neutralised at least partially by alkali metal hydroxides or ammonium basses and/or a starch of a cationically modified potato starch group, cationically modified potato starch, degradable potato and maltodextrin starches which are used in the form of stabilisers. A method for producing said aqueous dispersions by monomer radical polymerisation in an aqueous medium in the presence of said hydrosoluble polymerisates of the groups (a) and (b) and the use of said aqueous dispersions in the form of thickeners for aqueous systems are also disclosed.
