[Also in Division D2] Ureido propionic acids of the formula wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 denote identical or different aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radicals, R 1 may also denote the radical: and R 1 and R 3 may also represent hydrogen atoms or R 2 and R 3 together with the urea group may form a ring, may be obtained by reacting a ureido propionaldehyde of the formula wherein R 6 denotes hydrogen, an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical or the radical with an oxidizing agent at a temperature of from 0‹ to 100‹ C. The oxidizing agent employed may be organic or inorganic, examples being alkaline earth metal and organic peroxides, peracids, manganese (IV) or chromium (VI) derivatives, and they may be supplied to the reaction in a stoichiometric amount or in excess. It is preferred to use oxygen or mixtures containing oxygen as oxidizing agents in the presence of metal derivatives as catalysts. The reaction may be effected under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, continuously or batchwise, and an inert solvent may be present.

Novel hexahydropyrimidine derivatives of the formula where R 1 and R 2 denote hydrogen atoms or C 1-8 alkyl radicals, R 3 and R 4 denote C 1-4 alkyl radicals, R 5 denotes a hydrogen atom or a C 1-2 alkyl radical, R 6 denotes a C 1-6 alkyl radical or an alkoxyalkyl radical having one to four carbon atoms in the alkoxy group and one to six carbon atoms in the alkyl group, and X denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom, are prepared by reacting urea derivatives R 1 NH.CX.NHR 2 with aldehydes R 3 R 4 .CHCHO and R 5 .CHO or acetals thereof in a molar ratio of about 1: 1: 1 in the presence of an alkanol or a mono-C 1-4 alkyl ether of an α,#-alkanediol, at elevated temperature with an addition of an acid, the reaction product being neutralized with a base. The compounds may be converted to the corresponding 4-ureido-hexahydropyrimidines, which are useful as slow acting fertilizers, by reaction with urea.

Novel hexahydropyrimidine derivatives of the formula in which R 1 and R 2 denote hydrogen atoms or C 1-8 alkyl radicals, R 3 and R 4 denote C 1-4 alkyl radicals, R 5 denotes a hydrogen atom or a C 1-2 alkyl radical and X denotes an oxygen or sulphur atom, are prepared by reacting urea derivatives R 1 NH.CX.NHR 2 with aldehydes R 3 R 4 .CH.CHO and R 5 .CHO in about equimolar proportions with the addition of acid and at elevated temperatures, the reaction product being neutralized with a base. The compounds may be converted to the corresponding 4-ureidohexahydropyrimidines, which are useful as slowacting fertilizers, by reaction with urea.
