[Also in Divisions C5 and D1] The invention comprises tetrasilicic acid esters of long chain unsaturated fatty alcohols or of mixtures thereof with long chain saturated fatty alcohols which mixtures have iodine numbers of at least 40, the alcohols being unblown. By " long chain " is meant at least 12 carbon atoms. The esters may be prepared by the conventional reaction of silicon tetrachloride with the alcohols at elevated temperature. Examples of unsaturated alcohols are n-hexadecenyl, oleyl, elaidyl, eicosenyl, linoleyl and linolenyl alcohols. Examples of saturated alcohols are lauryl, n-tridecyl, myristyl, cetyl, n.heptadecyl, stearyl and arachidyl alcohols. The compounds are used as textile-treating agents (see Divisions C5 and D1).

    Abstract: Sizing fibres formed of cellulose and/or polyacrylonitrile or contng. at least 30% of these fibres by deposition of an aqs. sizing bath contng. a copolymer of (a) acrylonitrile and (b) acrylic acid or sodium or ammonium acrylate contng. (a) and (b) in mol. ratio 1 : 1.5 to 1 : 7, pref. 1 : 2-1 : 6, and in 10% aqs. soln. at 20 deg.C., having viscosity 20-2000 cP. pref. 250-2000 cP. and pH 2.5-6.5, pref. 3-5.5. The polymers dissolve readily in water and the sizing baths can be produced in cold water with moderate stirring. There is no loss by evaporation during application and the polymers give similar or improved effects in smaller amounts than normal sizes, e.g. improved abrasion resistance. The baths are stable and can be kept for several weeks, and the sizes are readily removed by washing.

    Abstract: Novel compounds of the formula wherein R1, R2 and R5 denote H, C1- 8 alkyl, allyl or C1- 8 hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl in which the hydroxyl or alkoxy group is separated from the oxygen atom Dy at least 2 carbon atoms and R3, R4 and R6 denote H or C1- 5 alkyl are produced by reacting a 4-hydroxy or alkoxy hexahydropyrimidone-2 with twice the molar amount of formaldehyde in an aqueous medium at a pH of above 9 and a temperature of 0 to 100 DEG C., and optionally reacting the product with a monoalcohol, a dialcohol or a monoalkylether of the latter, in the presence of an acid catalyst with or without a solvent or diluent. Preferred compounds have R1, R2 and R6 as H, and R3 and R4 as methyl and R5 as H or CH3. The products may be used for treating textiles.ALSO:A finishing agent for textile material which consists of or contains natural or regenerated cellulose comprises a compound of the formula wherein R1, R2 and R5 denote H, C1-8 alkyl, allyl, or C1-8 hydroxyalkyl or alkoxyalkyl in which the hydroxy or alkoxy group is separated from the oxygen atom by at least two carbon atoms, and R2, R4 and R6 denote H or C1-5 alkyl. The finishing agent is preferably used in aqueous solution together with an acid catalyst, and may be reacted with the textile material to form acetal bonds when wet or when wholly or partly dried, either immediately or after storage in the impregnated but unreacted condition. The finishing agent may be used together with known substances, e.g. dispersions of polymers such as a copolymer of n-butyl acrylate or an ethyloxylated polyamide. Exemplified acid catalysts are oxalic, maleic, monochloroacetic and hydrochloric acids, used together with MgCl2, NH4Cl or Zr(NO3)2.
