Abstract: Pentaerythritol dichlorhydrin is prepared by treating pentaerythritol with hydrogen chloride at about 100 DEG C. to 170 DEG C., the pentaerythritol being dissolved in a reaction product of pentaerythritol and hydrogen chloride. Specified solvents are pentaerythritol mono-, di- and trichlorhydrin and their mixtures, and 5,5-dichloromethyldioxan-1,3. The reaction may be continuous or discontinuous, and the unreacted hydrogen chloride, after removal of entrained liquid substances, is preferably recycled.
