    Abstract: An additive for fuel for Otto-cycle engines, e.g. premium gasoline, comprises:-(a) one or more compounds of the formula HO-[ROn]-H in which R is an alkylene radical and n is an integer from 2 to 5, in an amount of less than 0.1% by volume with reference to the fuel; and either (b) one or more monohydric alcohols in amount less than 1% by vol, or (c) one or more aliphatic and/or cyclic amides in amount less than 0.1% by vol., or a mixture of (b) and (c). Specified compounds (a) are glycols containing one or more ether linkages obtained from 1,2-propylene oxide or 1,2- or 2,3-butylene oxide. Specified compounds (b) are methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol and isobutanol. Specified compounds (c) are mono- and di-methyl formamide, and pyrrolidones-2 and piperidones-2 and derivatives thereof. The additive mixture may additionally contain less than 0.1% by vol. of one or more glycol ethers and/or monomeric glycols having hydroxyl groups on vicinal carbon atoms, for example diethylene glycol-monomethyl ether, propyl diglycol ether, butyl diglycol ether, ethylene glycol and 1,2-propylene, butylene and isobutylene glycols. Several specific additive mixtures are given.

    Abstract: A gasoline composition contains an organometallic compound of formula Mea(R)x(CO)y where Me is chromium, molybdenum, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel a is 1 to 4, R is an aromatic ligand, x is 0 to 5, and y is 0 to 9, both x and y not being zero at the same time, and as a stabilizer for the organo-metallic compound an artificially aged phenylene diamine of formula: where R and R1 are alkyl or aryl radicals having 3 to 7 carbon atoms. The phenylene diamine is artificially aged by exposure to light, or by oxidation with peroxides or oxygen, or by adding traces of metal, so that its solution in a liquid hydrocarbon has a colour which absorbs light rays of wavelengths of 350 to 550 millimicrons. The composition contains 0.01 to 0.3% by weight of the organo-metallic compound, and 0.001 to 0.3% by weight of the phenylene diamine, and may contain 0.001 to 0.2% by weight of an aliphatic long-chained fatty amine. In examples gasoline contains methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, cyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, dimestiylene chromium, dicyclopentadienyl nickel and molybdenum hexacarbonyl; N,N1-di-secondary-butyl-p-phenylene diamine aged by exposure to sunlight and by treatment with reformed gasoline containing peroxides, N,N-1di-benzyl-p-phenylene diamine, N-butyl-N1-propyl phenylene diamine and N,N1-di-isobutyl-p-phenylene diamine, the last three being aged by exposure to sunlight; oleylamine and laurylamine, and red dyestuff. Lists of aromatic liquids which may be present in the organometallic compounds and suitable phenylene diamine derivatives, are given.

    Abstract: An agent for thawing surfaces covered with ice and/or snow consists of or contains a mixture of at least one water-soluble monohydric alcohol, at least one water-soluble polyhydric alcohol, and formamide and/or a formamide derivative in which the proportion of monohydric alcohol or alcohols is from 40 to 90% by weight and the proportion of formamide or derivative thereof is from 10 to 60% by weight, both with reference to the total amount of alcohols. From 5 to 50% of a monoether of ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol may also be included. The monohydric alcohol may be methanol, ethanol, propanol or isopropanol: the polyhydric alcohol may be glycerin or ethylene, propylene, butylene, hexylene, diethylene, triethylene, dipropylen or tripropylene glycol. A suitable formamide derivative is an alkyl formamide such as monomethyl or dimethyl formamide. As corrosion inhibitors, a fatty acid polyamide and an acetylene derivative may be included.
