    Abstract: A diesel fuel contains 0.1 to 2% (vol.) of a nitrate of a hydroxycarboxylic ester. Those preferred have the formula R1 being hydrogen, an aliphatic or an aromatic radical; R2 being hydrogen, an aliphatic or an aromatic radical; and R3 an aliphatic or an aromatic radical. Specified nitrates are those of methyl ethyl and isopropyl lactate, and that of methyl glycolate, acid urethyl hydroxy isobutyrate.

    Abstract: An additive for fuel for Otto-cycle engines, e.g. premium gasoline, comprises:-(a) one or more compounds of the formula HO-[ROn]-H in which R is an alkylene radical and n is an integer from 2 to 5, in an amount of less than 0.1% by volume with reference to the fuel; and either (b) one or more monohydric alcohols in amount less than 1% by vol, or (c) one or more aliphatic and/or cyclic amides in amount less than 0.1% by vol., or a mixture of (b) and (c). Specified compounds (a) are glycols containing one or more ether linkages obtained from 1,2-propylene oxide or 1,2- or 2,3-butylene oxide. Specified compounds (b) are methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol and isobutanol. Specified compounds (c) are mono- and di-methyl formamide, and pyrrolidones-2 and piperidones-2 and derivatives thereof. The additive mixture may additionally contain less than 0.1% by vol. of one or more glycol ethers and/or monomeric glycols having hydroxyl groups on vicinal carbon atoms, for example diethylene glycol-monomethyl ether, propyl diglycol ether, butyl diglycol ether, ethylene glycol and 1,2-propylene, butylene and isobutylene glycols. Several specific additive mixtures are given.

    Abstract: An additive for a fuel for an Otto-cycle engine comprises monomethylformamide, (HCONH-CH3), and one or more solubilizers from the following classes of substances, namely: (1) low boiling point monohydric aliphatic alcohols containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; (2) monoethers of dihydric alcohols; and (3) heterocyclic compounds containing oxygen and/or nitrogen. Suitable solubilizers include methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and isobutanol in class 1; diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol monopropyl ether, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether and ethylene glycol monopropyl ether in class 2; and pyrrolidone and its derivatives and dioxolanes in class 3. A p mixture of monomethylformamide, methanol, isobutanol and methyl pyrrolidone is stated to possess a synergistic effect.
