Abstract:
In a matrix liquid crystal display, the visual contrast of the individual image points (= pixels) is enhanced by illuminating or exposing to illumination the pixel lines (2) successively in groups at least during part of the time in which they show maximum contrast. Addressing of the illumination is adapted to the duration and phase of addressing of the individual pixel lines. Strip-wise illumination of the pixel lines can be effected, for example, by using strip-shaped light sources (4) or a second liquid crystal system which can either have a strip structure or be composed of strips and acts like a stepwise moving slot.
Abstract:
A novel process which has a positive pressure dependence for the capture of noxious emissions during thermal combustion or oxidation wherein coal is impregnated with CaO at a molar ratio not exceeding 3:1, then thermally oxidized at preferably superatmospheric pressures, typically from 1 to 4 atmospheres, such that H2S is preferentially captured rather than SO2 resulting in a more efficient sulfur capture process.
Abstract:
A process for producing coatings comprising cubic boron nitride on a substrate (7). The process involves magnetron sputter deposition of a heated BN source (4) in an evacuated atmosphere (6) having a limited partial pressure of nitrogen and a noble gas. During cathodic sputtering of the BN source (4), a metal dopant selected from Groups IA, IVA, VA, VIIA, IB, IIB, IIIB, IVB and VB of the periodic table, the metal dopant preferably being Al or Cu, is deposited at a concentration less than 1.5 atomic percent.
Abstract:
Methods for detecting the presence of Coxiella burnetii in biological samples, as well as a method for differentiating strains of C. burnetii that are capable of causing acute disease from those strains capable of causing chronic disease. The methods generally comprise treating cells contained within the biological sample to expose cellular DNA, and hybridizing the cellular DNA (specifically rickettsial DNA) with a C. burnetii-specific labeled DNA probe. Radio-isotope and biotin labels are preferred, allowing detection through autoradiography and colorimetric assays, respectively.
Abstract:
A process for casting metallic strips thicker than from melt-drag processes but thinner than the inherent normal thickness of a cast melt. The disclosed process casts molten metal (5), without decanting or accelerating the molten stream, onto a channel-shaped chill surface (2). After casting, the molten strip acquires a high thermal gradient. Following thermal shrinkage of the underside the molten top layer is squeegeed using a chill roll (7) to uniformly distribute and crystallyse the top surface.
Abstract:
A respiratory care device utilizes pressurized oxygen to pump an oxygen/air mixture to the patient. The device comprises a coupled turbine and blower. The pressurized oxygen drives the turbine which pumps air through the blower. The oxygen may be mixed with the air in selected ratios and delivered to the patient. Droplets may be added to the oxygen, to the air or to the mixture, upstream or downstream of the device or within the device.
Abstract:
Mineral charge particles of silica or alumina are grafted with a hydrolysis product from a di- or trialkoxysilane whose functional group is compatible with an organic phase into which said grafted particles are ultimately incorporated. The grafted particles are separated from the aqueous hydrolysis medium by spray-drying. The organic phase comprising the grafted mineral particles is used to provide coatings with abrasion resistant properties.
Abstract:
A high-velocity, multisolid fluidized bed process utilizes a reactor (1) having a reduced-cross-sectional area (6) in a lower region wherein large bed particles (4) are fluidized and/or entrained by high-velocity, fluidizing gas (2). If they are entrained by the gas, they are lifted to the enlarged-cross-section, upper region (7) wherein the reduced velocity fluidizing gas now either fluidizes the particles and/or allows them to drop back to the reduced-cross-section zone. Meanwhile, the fluidizing gas entrains fine bed particles (5) at high velocity through the reactor. The fine particles are recycled out the top of the rector and back into the reactor in the reduced-cross-section zone.
Abstract:
This hard layer is obtained by incorporating a maximum of 2 weight % of nitrogen in Mo or W by the technique of cathode sputtering in a nitrogen reactive medium, the temperature at which the nitrogen incorporation occurs which is in the order of 300oC preventing the nitrogen to precipitate at the grains-joints during cooling, so that the layer only comports a cubic centered Mo or W phase, thus preserving its own ductility to the metal.
Abstract:
A variety of hypoglycemic compositions for use in the management of maturity onset non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) are disclosed. Suitable hypoglycemic compositions include a polar solvent extract of at least one part of the plant Hexachlymus edulis or related Hexachlymus species. Methods for preparing these hypoglycemic compositions are also disclosed. The present invention also discloses methods for reducing the blood glucose level in a patient, as well as methods for reducing symptomatic conditions associated with diabetes in a patient.
