    Abstract: 1331089 Polyamide-imides BAYER AG 10 Nov 1970 [11 Nov 1969] 53326/70 Heading C3R [Also in Division B2] A process for producing polyamide-imides comprises reacting (a) a poluamide with (b) an at least di-isocyanate or compound capable of reacting as such under the reaction conditions, and (c) an anhydride of an at least tricarboxylic acid or compound which forms such an anhydride under the reaction conditions at - 20‹ to 450‹ C. Numerous examples are given of each reactant including substituted ureas and alkyl carbamic acid esters for (b) and maleic anhydride-ethylene or styrene copolymers for (c), and also of solvents and catalysts which may be used. In examples, the reactants are: (a) nylon 6 or 66 of R.V. 2À95 or 2À75; (b) 4,4 1 -diisocyanate diphenyl methane, tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate; and (c) trimellitic anhydride, cyclopentane tetracarboxylic dianhydride, tetrahydrofuran tetracarboxylic dianhydride or pyromellitic dianhydride, cresol and/or phenol being used as solvent with no catalyst. Reference is made to Specification 1,009,956. The product may be subsequently reacted with diamines, polyesters or ethers with terminal acid groups, polyols, aminoalcohols or polycarboxylic acids. Uses.-The polymers may be used as lacquers, foams or mouldings. They may be mixed with fillers or pigments, or for use as wire enamels with polyesters, polyurethanes or polyhydantoins. In examples, solution in cresol or phenol are coated on metal or glass plates or copper wire and stored at temperatures ranging from 200‹ to 300‹ C.

[Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C3] Laminates may be prepared having as one of the layers a polyhydantoin plastic containing imide groups prepared by reacting, in a first stage, a polyfunctional glycine ester derivative containing at least two glycine ester groupings and having the formula wherein R is an n-valent aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic radical, each R 1 represents hydrogen or an alkyl radical, R 2 represents a hydroxyl, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino, alkoxy or aryloxy group, R 3 represents hydrogen or an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical and n represents an integer from 2 to 4, with an excess of a polyisocyanate or masked polyisocyanate (based on amino groups in the glycine ester derivative) to form a preadduct containing hydantoin and urethane and/or urea groups, and in a second stage, reacting the preadduct with a polyfunctional compound containing at least one cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride group and at least one additional group capable of undergoing a condensation or addition reaction with isocyanate, urethane or amino groups in the preadduct, the reactions being effected in an organic solvent at 20‹ to 500‹ C. The polyfunctional compounds will preferably contain several cyclic anhydride groups or at least one cyclic anhydride group and additional carboxy, hydroxyl or NH-groups in the molecule. In a typical example N,N 1 - bis - (carbomethoxydimethylcarbinyl) - 4,4 1 - diamino diphenyl methane is reacted with excess diphenylmethane 4,4 1 - diisocyanate to form a polyhydantoin oligomer which is reacted with pyromellitic acid dianhydride in cresol. The imide-modified polyhydantoins are suitably applied under pressure to glass fibre-, silk-, or asbestos cloths to obtain laminates.

    Abstract: 1279230 Coating FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER AG 8 Dec 1970 [16 Dec 1969] 58218/ 70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Coatings are obtained and wires are lacquered with a solution of poly(amide-imideester) which has recurring unit where R 1 and R 2 are organic radicals and n is 2-20. R 1 and R 2 may each be an optionally substituted aliphatic, aliphatic-aromatic or aromatic radical, e.g. an optional substituted poly- -ether, -ester, -hydantoin, -urea, -urethane, -amide, or -imide radical. Polyamideimide-esters are prepared by reacting at -20‹ to 450‹C a polyisocyanate P with a lactone and cyclic carboxylic acid anhydride which contains at least one other COOH group, or a precursor thereof, or a mixture of polycarboxylic acids and polyanhydrides. The reaction may be performed in a solvent and in the presence of a polycondensation catalyst. The polyisocyanate may be R 2 -[-N=C=O] z where z is 2 or 3. Precursors of the polyisocyanate include addition-products of phenols, HCN, and e.g. ethylacetoacetate. The Lactone may be it may be substituted with alkyl and aryl groups, examples being given. The Anhydride may be (HOOC) x R 1 [(CO) 2 ] y , where x and y are each 1-3. Other monomers may be included in the poly(amide-imide-ester), e.g. diamines, diols, triols, aminoalkanols, lactanes, or poly- -carboxylic-acids, -esters, -ethers, -hydantoins, or -urethanes having terminal COOH, OH, or NCO gps; e.g. a polyester of terephthalic acid, ethylene glycol, and glycerol.
