Pressurized oil is selectively delivered to one of the advance portion or the retard portion of the recess, and the relative positions of the rotor and the housing are positively locked in position when the spool valve is in its null position by a locking pin (48;148;248) that is axially shiftable relative to the housing between a locking position and an unlocked position.

Abstract: A phaser (25) for adjusting the timing between a camshaft (17) and a crankshaft. The phaser consists of an outer housing (12) having internal (9) and external (10) teeth and an inner housing connected to the camshaft. The outer teeth couple to the cam drive - the timing chain (11), timing belt or timing gears. A worm mounted (13) on the inner housing is meshed with the internal teeth of the outer housing. The worm gear is connected to one or two drive wheels (16), which are rotated by contact with stationary plates (41,44). The plates are moved by electromagnetic coils (21,22) to contact the drive wheel or wheels, and turn them in one direction or the other. The actuators are activated by an engine control unit. The plates can be mounted concentrically on one side of the phaser, or on opposite sides.

Abstract: A VCT system having a housing, a rotor, a locking pin (120), and a spool valve. The spool valve has a spool (109) slidably located in a bore (130) with a plurality of ports. The spool has a plurality of lands that block the ports. When the spool is in the advance position, the plurality of lands allow fluid through the ports from the retard chamber (104) to the advance chamber (102). When the spool is in the retard position, the plurality of lands allow fluid through the ports from the advance chamber to the retard chamber. When the spool is in the null position, the plurality of lands allow fluid from a source (S) to the advance and retard chambers. When the spool is in the locked position, the plurality of lands allow fluid supplied to one of the advance chamber or the retard chamber to move the locking pin to a locked position.
