    Abstract: Compositions which inhibit the growth and proliferation of microoganisms, especially which inhibit the formation of slime in aqueous liquids, comprise (A) at least one monosubstituted 2-bromoacetophenone of formula wherein n and n1 each represent 0 or 1, and when n is 0, n1 is 0, the 2-bromoacetophenone being such that, when n is 1 and n1 is 0, the point of attachment of the CH3O group is at any one of the positions designated as ortho, meta and para and, when, n and n1 are each 0 or when n and n1 are each 1, the point of attachment of the OH or CH3CO2 group is at either of the positions designated as meta and para; to gether with (B) either (i) at least one glyco ether having the formula H(OC3H6)xOCyH2y + 1 wherein x and y are integers of from 1 to 3 and 1 to 4 respectively, or (ii) at least one ester having the formula wherein x1 is 1 or 2 and R11 is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical or an alkoxy substituted straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and/or (c) at least one dispersant having the formula R1-O-(RC2H3-O)2H wherein z is an integer of from 1 to 20, R is hydrogen or methyl, and R1 is a straight or branched chain alkyl-substituted phenyl radical or a straight or branched chain alkyl radical, wherein the alkyl radical contains from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, the composition containing component (A) in a proportion of from 5 to 50%, component (B), when present in a proportion up to 95%, and component (C), when present, in a proportion up to 95%, all the percentages being by weight of the total (A) + (B) + (C) content of the composition.ALSO:A composition suitable for inhibiting the growth and protiheration of microorganisms comprises (a) at least one monosubstituted 2-bromoacetophenone having the formula: wherein n and n1 each represent 0 or 1, and when n is 0, n1 is 0, the 2-bromoacetophenone being such that, when n is 1 and n1 is 0, the point of attachment of the CH3O group is at any one of the positions designated as ortho, meta and para and, when n and n1 are each 0 or when n and n1 are each 1, the point of attachment of the OH or CH3 CO2 group is at either of the positions designated as meta and para; together with (b) either (i) at least one glycol ether having the formula: H(OC3H6)xOCyH2y + 1 wherein x and y are integers of from 1 to 3 and 1 to 4 respectively, or (ii) at least one ester having the formula: wherein x1 is 1 or 2 and R11 is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical or an alkoxy substituted straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and/or (c) at least one dispersant having the formula: R1-O-(RC2H3-O)2H wherein z is an integer of from 1 to 20, R is hydrogen or methyl, and R1 is a straight or branched chain alkyl-substituted phenyl radical or a straight or branched chain alkyl radical, wherein the alkyl radical contains from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, the composition containing component (A) in a proportion of from 5 to 50%, component (B), when present in a proportion up to 95%, and component (C), when present, in a proportion up to 95%, all the percentages being by weight of the total (A) + (B) + (C) content of the composition.ALSO:Coloured paper produced by incorporating acidic or basic dyes has its colour intensified by incorporating therein a composition which comprises (A) at least one monosubstituted 2-bromoacetophenone having the formula wherein n and n1 each represent 0 or 1, and when n is 0, n1 is 0, there 2-bromoacetophenone being such that, when n is 1 and n1 is 0, the point of attachment of the CH3O group is at any one of the positions designated as ortho, meta and para and, when, n and n1 are each 0 or when n and n1 are each 1, the point of attachment of the OH or CH3 CO2 group is at either of the positions designated as meta and para; together with (B) either (i) at least one glycol ether having the formula wherein x and y are integers of from 1 to 3 and 1 to 4 respectively, or (ii) at least one ester having the formula wherein x1 is 1 or 2 and R11 is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical or an alkoxy substituted straight or branched chain alkyl radical containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and/or (c) at least one dispersant having the formula wherein z is an integer of from 1 to 20, R is hydrogen or methyl, and R1 is a straight or branched chain alkyl-substituted phenyl radical or a straight or branched chain alkyl radical, wherein the alkyl radical contains from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, the composition containing component (A) in a proportion of from 5 to 50%, component (B), when present in a proportion up to 95%, and component (C), when present, in a proportion up to 95%, all the percentages being by weight of the total (A) + (B) + (C) content of the composition.

    Abstract: 932,320. Coated wire fabric; paper. BUCKMAN LABORATORIES Inc. Feb. 20, 1962 [July 3, 1961], No. 6558/62. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group XVIII] A composition suitable for use as a protecting agent for a metal wire cloth, such as those used in Fourdrinier machines for paper-making, comprises 2-amino-ethanol and an alkali metal salt of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. There may also be added (A) a water-soluble salt of cyanodithioimidocarbonic acid, (B) a diaminoalkane with not more than 6 carbon atoms and the amino groups on adjacent carbon atoms, the ratio of B to A being 1: 1.5, and (C) a watersoluble salt of an N-monoalkyl substituted dithiocarbamic acid, with the alkyl radical having less than 4 carbon atoms. This composition is included in the furnish for paper production so that a film is formed on the surface of the strands of the Fourdrinier wire cloth thereby reducing mechanical and chemical wear.
