    Abstract: The appts. processes a video colour image signal, e.g. derived from a colour document reader, and forms a visual image on an image forming, pref. electrophotography device such as a laser printer, corresp. to the processed signal. The resolution of the image can be changed during its formation. Processing circuitry is included to discriminate a character portion, pref. a black character portion, of an object colour image and change the resolution according to the results of the discrimination. Pref. the resolution is controlled to be higher when a black character portion is discriminated.
