Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal element capabel of uniformly orienting even ferroelectric liquid crystal lacked with a cholesteric phase, equaling the inversion thresholds between bistable two states and lessening seizure. CONSTITUTION:This ferroelectric liquid crystal element has the ferroelectric liquid crystal 16 and a pair of substrates 11a, 11b which face each other by holding the ferroelectric liquid crystal 16 in-between and on which electrodes 12a, 12b for impressing voltages to the ferroelectric liquid crystals 16 respectively are formed on the opposite surfaces thereof. The ferroelectric liquid crystal 16 in the orientation atate exhibits at least two stable states. The oriented film formed on the one substrate is subjected to an orientation state in one direction. The angle formed by the liquid crystal molecules formed at this time and the substrate, pretilt angle alpha, is >=5 deg.. The other substrate is subjected to a perpendicular orientation state.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reproduce a desired optical pulse signal train information from an optical pulse train that undergone the time division multiplex modulation in a picosecond time area. CONSTITUTION:Each signal data pulse train is reproduced in real time from an optical data pulse train 21 that undergone the time division multiplexing. The train 21 is spatially increased, and also the wave head is tilted. A probe pulse 25 is also spatially increased. Both optical data and probe pulses are made incident on a medium 27 having the double photon absorbing effect so that these pulses cross spatially to each other. Then the output light that received the nonlinear transmission factor dependent on the time overlapping state of both data and probe pulses undergone the time division multiplexing is detected as the information on a spatial pattern.

A first and second carbon, containing film members 10 having a second gap 7 for forming an electron emission part 5, are formed on the first and second conductive film members 4, respectively. In the case of the first and second carbon containing film members 10 having the second gap 7 and facing each other, π-plasmon loss energy is in the range of around 4.5 to 5.5 eV, and the intensity of the π-plasmon loss peak is around 70% of that of single-crystal graphite or higher.

A surface coat layer 9 has the role of making it difficult to conduct the heat in the current carrying to an electron emitting element to the base body 1, and borosilicate glass, zinc borosilicate glass, or alumino borosilicate glass is used therefor. A surface conductive type electron emitting element is desirably used as the electron emitting element. A deposit composed mainly of carbon or a carbon compound and a thin film which is mainly composed of Pd or PdO are desirably used as an electron emission part 5 and a conductive thin film 4, respectively. A plurality of electron emitting elements are arranged in parallel on a substrate, and element electrodes are connected to mutually insulated X-direction and Y-direction metal wirings.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce time variation of electron emission characteristics of electron emission device by providing a substrate containing Na, a first layer formed on the substrate and having SiO2 set to the major component, and a second layer containing electron conductive oxide. SOLUTION: A substrate for forming an electron source defines an electron emission device on a second layer 7. A first layer 6 having SiO2 set to the major component is provided mainly for blocking the diffusion of Na to a member constituting the electron emission device and has an effect of suppressing the Na diffusion from the substrate 1 by formed on the substrate 1 containing Na. A second layer 7 contains electron conductive oxide and is provided to prevent the electrification of the substrate surface where the electron emission device is formed. The second layer 7 has the electron conductivity to suppress the charge-up of the substrate surface so that the electron emission device arranged on the second layer 7 obtains stable electron emission characteristics.

SOLUTION: A conductive film 4b, having an electron emission part, is electrically connected to a pair of element electrodes 2 and 3 being opposite to each other. There are two processes (a) and (b) for manufacturing an electron emission element having conductive film 4b and pair of element electrodes 2 and 3. In the process (a), a film composed of organometal compound or complex formed as a precursor for material constituting the conductive film 4b is provided, to be connected to the element electrodes 2 and 3. In the process (b), a voltage is applied to the film composed of organometal compound or complex through the element electrodes 2 and 3, while a temperature of not less than the decomposition temperature of organometal compound or complex is retained. Then, this film composed of organometal compound or complex is used as the conductive film 4b having the electron emission part.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To lower hysteresis and unstability which are of problems in the case of execution of gradation driving in the process for production of the liquid crystal element having a pair of substrates subjected to a uniaxial orientation treatment by rubbing conductive high-polymer films as the uniaxial orientation treatment and impressing a DC voltage or an AC voltage including a DC voltage component to the liquid crystal element. CONSTITUTION:This process consists in production of the liquid crystal element having the ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 and a pair of the substrates 31, 35 which hold the ferroelectric liquid crystal 1 between these substrates and face with each other and are formed with electrodes 32, 36 for impressing voltages respectively on the opposite surfaces and are subjected to the uniaxial orientation treatment for orienting the ferroelectric liquid crystal 1. The uniaxial orientation treatment consists in rubbing the conductive high-polymer films 33, 37. In addition, the process includes the stage for impressing the DC voltage or the AC voltage including the DC voltage component to the liquid crystal element. The temp. at the time of impressing the DC voltage or the AC voltage including the DC voltage component to the liquid crystal element is specified to a temp. region where the ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits an isotropic phase.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide an optical data pulse train generating method which can generate the optical data pulse trains at a super-high speed and with no limitation by an electrical modulation speed. CONSTITUTION:An optical pulse 6 passes through a beam splitter 1 and is divided into plural diffracted beams by a diffraction grating 2. Then the diffracted beams are turned into the one-dimensional perallel beams by a collimator lens 3 and then made incident on a space modulator 4. The modulator 4 is divided into plural segments according to the number of information bits. Then only the transmitted beams reach a reflector 5 among those beams that are transmitted (bit 1) or cut off (bit 0) by the modulator 4. These transmitted beams are reflected on a stepped reflecting surface end the optical path difference, i.e., the time delay is caused between the beams at a fixed interval. Then these beams are condensed on the same optical path by a collimator lens 3 via the modulator 4. These condenced beams have the time delays at the fixed intervals end therefore a time series pulse train 7 is generated.
