    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display device which is free from a defect in initial orientation of a liquid crystal and a defect in reverse tilt discrimination orientation at the time of impression of a driving voltage and has good display quality by orienting liquid crystal molecules by providing these molecules with a desired pretilt angle as the liquid crystal display element formed with horizontally oriented films consisting of polyimide by an LB method. CONSTITUTION:The horizontally oriented films 8, 9 consisting of polyimide films formed by laminating monomolecular films of amphiphatic compds. having hydrophobic groups and hydrophilic groups by the LB method and subjecting the laminated films to an imidization treatment are so formed by controlling the number of lamination of the monomolecular films that the long chain alkyl groups per unit area remain at a prescribed ratio. The liquid crystal molecules A are oriented at the pretilt angle phi meeting the remaining ratio of the long chain alkyl groups per unit areas of the horizontally oriented films 8, 9.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To uniformly vertically orient liquid crystal molecules and to obtain uniform optical characteristics by using films formed by depositing >=1 layers of monomolecular films of a compd. prepd. by bringing polyamic acid and long-chain alkyl amine into reaction as the vertical oriented films. CONSTITUTION:The soln. of the polyamic acid deriv. compd. is first formed by mixing a soln. prepd. by dissolving the polyamic acid into a solvent and a soln. prepd. by dissolving the long-chain alkyl amine at 1:1 ratio and bringing the polyamic acid and the long-chain alkyl amine into an ion bond reaction. The vertical oriented films 8, 9 are formed by superposing and depositing several layers and some tens layers of the monomolecular films of the polyamic acid deriv. compd. by a Langmuir-Blodgett technique onto substrates 1 formed with transparent electrodes 4 and formed with insulating films 6 thereon and drying the deposited films. Since the orientability of the vertical oriented films 8, 9 formed in such a manner is uniform over the entire part of the oriented films, the liquid crystal molecules are uniformly vertically oriented and the uniform optical characteristics are obtd.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To use a shallow water tank and reduce a space above the water tank by transferring a monomolecular film on the surface of water onto the surface of a base plate via a rotating drum. CONSTITUTION:Liq. substances are dropped on the water surface between a transfer barrier 13 in a water tank 11 and a rotating drum 14 therein to allow their monomolecules to flow on the water surface so as to be spread in the form of a film. A monomolecular film A on the water surface is thereafter forced toward a rotating drum 14 by a transfer barrier 13 and the rotating drum 14 is rotated synchronously therewith, whereby the monomolecular film A on the water surface is caused to adhere to the outer peripheral surface of the rotating drum 14 and then picked up thereby, and a base plate 10 is then carried and fed on the rotating drum 14 synchronously with the rotation thereof, whereby the monomolecular film A adhering to the outer periphery of the rotating drum 14 is transferred onto the underside of the base plate 10. In this way a shallow water tank can be used and a small space above the water tank 11 suffices for this purpose.
