    Abstract: 1314645 Vehicle safety belts SOC ANON AUTOMOBILES CITROEN 2 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 36207/71 Heading A3V A vehicle safety harness of the lap and diagonal belt type comprises a single strap having elements 4a and 6a, a further strap 9, the straps being anchored to the vehicle bodywork 3 at anchorage points 5, 7 and 10, a buckle 8 connecting the two elements 4a and 6a to the strap 9, and a sleeve 12 which envelops the parts of the elements 4a and 6a adjacent the buckle as shown, one end of the sleeve abutting the buckle, such that in use the sleeve maintains the diagonal belt at a position 11a away from the wearer's neck in order to prevent displacement of the belt and consequent injury to the wearer's neck in an accident. The sleeve may be made of a deformable material which may be resilient, e.g. rubber, plastics, leather or fabric, such that stress on the belt elements 4a and 6a causes deformation of the sleeve 12 thus absorbing energy and decreasing the effects on the wearer of the forces on the belt.

A vehicle comprises a fluid operated power steering system and an anti-roll device as specified in Specification 1,157,016, in which the action of the time delay piston 19 is inhibited during cornering in response to a pressure differential in the steering circuit. In one of the lines 43a serving the hydraulic steering ram 44 is incorporated a member 42 having spring controlled one-way valves 47 and 48 which produce a pressure differential, according to the direction of flow, in lines 45 and 46. These act, in conjunction with springs 55 and 56, upon pistons 49 and 50 which act upon a piston 51 in a closed hydraulic circuit with the damping piston 19 so as to oppose its damping effect. In a modification, Fig. 2, the pistons 49 1 and 50 1 are acted upon through orifices 64 and 65 in washers 62 and 63.

A valve according to claims 1 and 2 of the parent Specification is arranged so that, when changing from the "road" position R to that for raising the vehicle body H, it is unnecessary to pass through the "lower" position B. Additionally, to avoid tilting of the body during raising, only one set of suspension elements is supplied with fluid from the pump, the body being maintained horizontal by operation of the height correctors. Port 2 is connected to the fluid supply, ports 3 and 3a to the front and rear suspension elements, respectively, port 4 to the return line of the height correctors, and port 5 to the fluid reservoir.

[Also in Division F1] A tank for a fluid under pressure is made by deforming a sheet metal disc into a cup having a domed bottom 2, and shaping the open end of the cup to form an orifice into which is fitted a liquid tight closure member 4. As described, a flexible diaphragm 11 for containing gas and secured to a cap 14, is held during the deformation of the cup to form the orifice, against the domed bottom 2 of the tank by suction applied through the filling valve of the diaphragm. The closure member 4 which has a circular collar 5 in contact with the inner wall of the tank, is secured to the tank by a weld bead 9 or by a rubber or plastics ring (18) (Fig. 3, not shown) placed between a shoulder (20) of the collar (5) and the inner wall of the tank.

Synchronized reverse and first forward speed are obtained in a synchromesh gear-box by right and leftward movement respectively of a sliding synchronizing clutch hub 15 by fork 18 on rail 19a, to selectively clutch gear 14, in mesh with a reverse idler 16 which is also in mesh with input gear 5 fast on input shaft 4, or gear 13, in mesh with gear 6, to the output shaft 10. Synchronized second and third speeds are obtained by selectively clutching gears 7 or 8 respectively to shaft 4 by means of sliding synchronizing clutch hub 9 slid by fork 17 on rail 19. The gear is driven through a torque converter 1, 2 and a separating clutch 3.

A device for adjusting the length of a safety belt for vehicle passengers comprises a buckle frame 3 attachable to a buckle member fixed inside the vehicle, a pin 8 slidable in apertures 11 in the frame, a slot in the frame accommodating two plies of the belt 7 which passes round the pin, tightening of the belt producing wedging of the double ply of the belt between the pin and each edge of the slot, the pin being constantly urged by means 13 towards the edges of the slot whereby the belt is wedged between the pin 8 and the edges of the slot even when the belt is untensioned. As shown, the slot is defined by two rods 6 and the means 13 is a spring. Each end of the pin 8 engages in a notch in a spring 13 and each spring has a projection which engages an edge of an aperture 11 to hold the pin in belt gripping position. To release the belt projecting knobs 12 on the ends of the pin are moved away from the slot and the projection moves to the outer surface of the frame. Various spring means for urging the pin into gripping position are described. The spring may be a bent spring leaf, a helical coil or an arm carrying a tooth integral with a knob. The knob may have a spring urged downwardly extending tooth. Two blade springs may be bent inwardly or outwardly of the frame, anchored at one end to the pin and slidable in slots or fixed to the frame at the other end. The springs are then pressed inwardly to release the pin. The pin may have two members spring urged outwardly of the frame and with tapered surfaces which engage the edge of an aperture to effect belt gripping. The members are moved inwardly to release the grip on the belt. Instead of using a spring the rolls 6 and the pin 8 are made of ferromagnetic materials and one member is magnetised Fig. 25 (not shown). The pin may be held in gripping position by a spring urged pivoted cam. The buckle frame may have portions projecting to each side of the pin knobs or spring means to prevent inadvertent operation thereof.

    Abstract: 1,153,210. Hydraulic brakes. SOC. ANON. ANDRE CITROEN. 30 Dec., 1966 [3 Jan., 1966], No. 58446/66. Heading F2F. In an hydraulic braking system of a road vehicle, of the kind comprising separate front and rear wheel braking circuits and wherein a pressure-limiting valve operable in dependence upon load is included in the rear wheel braking circuit, the load-modified pressure in the rear wheel braking circuit is fed to additional brake cylinders on the front wheels, and a safety device is provided which, in the event of failure of either circuit, automatically isolates the pressure-limiting valve and, in the case of front wheel brake circuit failure, re-routes the fluid supply so that full pressure may then be obtained in the rear wheel brake circuit. As shown, a pump 4 supplies fluid from a reservoir 2 to accumulators 7, 8 which feed the front and rear wheel braking circuits 13, 15 through lines 20 and 18, 19, respectively, a safety device 21, and a dual driver's valve 11 comprising tandem spool valves 11a, 11b. The front wheel circuit 13 supplies front wheel cylinders 14 at a pressure determined solely by valve 11, while rear wheel circuit 15 supplies, by way of a load-sensitive valve 17, both rear wheel brake cylinders 16 and an additional brake cylinder 16a on each front wheel. A line 36 from the rear wheel circuit feeds rear wheel brake pressure to a control chamber of safety device. 21, causing a piston 29 to normally remain in an upper position, as shown, while the same pressure acts also on one end of a shuttle valve arrangement which consists of a valve spool 26 and a plunger 28 slidable within the piston 29. The opposite end of the shuttle arrangement, i.e. the upper end of the spool 26, is acted on by front wheel brake pressure via line 37 so that, under the influence of springs 27, 32 the spool 26 normally takes up the balanced position shown. Should the circuit 13 fail, the spool 26 will be raised to a position in which the line 19 from the loadsensitive valve 17 is cut off by the lower of the three lands on the spool and the space between the lower and middle lands connects line 20 to the rear wheel brake circuit, the middle land simultaneously cutting off the outlet to the defective front wheel brake circuit. Should the latter fail, spool 26 will descend to a lower position, depressing the plunger 28 and piston 29, so that the middle land will cut off the outlet to the rear wheel brake circuit while still maintaining the connection to the front wheel brake circuit.
