Abstract: A data packet network comprises a policer module (17) metering the flow in a metering unit (49) and deciding in a decision unit (43) whether arrived packets are to be transmitted or discarded. The flow of transmitted packets is metered by a sliding window procedure having a fixed window length to meter the flow of data packets. The sliding window is divided in a plurality of subwindows of equal length and the sliding window moves by steps corresponding to the length of the subwindows. For each subwindow and for the sliding window counts of transmitted and/or discarded bytes and/or packets are determined and stored in memory cells (CSW; C1, ..., CN). For an arrived packet the counts of the current subwindow are compared to a maximum value obtained from the counts of the sliding window and an absolute maximum value and based on the result of the comparison, the decision means will transmit or discard the packet. The policer module can also perform soft policing in the case where the packets belong to different traffic classes. Then individual sliding windows having subwindows are used for each traffic class and the counts are calculated for each class. The comparison is in that case made based on a value of the total aggregated flow of packets from the module compared to some maximum value indicating a congestion state. The sliding window procedure using subwindows meters the flow efficiently and is especially useful for allocating transmission resources for traffic of different priorities.

Abstract: Transportation of low bit rate, circuit emulation data over an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) connection is improved by packetizing the circuit emulation data into short packets in accordance with a packetization clock. The packetization clock is derived as a function of the ATM cell shaping clock. The short packets are then multiplexed together into a single ATM connection and transported to a receiving unit in accordance with an ATM cell shaping clock. The circuit emulation data is then extracted at the receiving unit and forwarded to the corresponding circuit emulation connection at the appropriate service rate, which is recovered based on ATM connection characteristics.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for synchronising at least one node (N1-N4) in a net (n), which node (N1-N4) is used as an exampl e for packet oriented transmission. A server (C), generating a stable frequenc y (fs), and the node (N1-N4) measures the number of cycles of the stable frequency (fs) respective the number of cycles of a local frequency (f1-f4), generated by the node (N1-N4). These measurements are started respective stopped at the instant of time when a phase of a signal, generated by a powe r network (PN) connected to the server (C) and the node (N1-N4), equals zero. The results of the measurements are compared and the node (N1-N4) is adjuste d accordingly. Measurements can continuously be performed by the server (C) an d the node (N1-N4).

Abstract: Data packets are transmitted in forward and backward directions via a multiplexed communications medium, wherein each of the data packets is associated with a corresponding one of a plurality of connections. Transmission is performed by, for each connection, assigning a forward delay limit and a corresponding backward delay limit, wherein the sum of the forward and backward delay limits is equal to a round-trip delay bound for the connection. The assigned forward delay limits are used to determine the order in which the data packets supplied by the plurality of connections will be transmitted in the forward direction. Similarly, the assigned backward delay limits are used to determine the order in which the data packets supplied by the plurality of connections will be transmitted in the backward direction. One embodiment accomplishes the forward and backward delay limit assignments by maintaining forward and backward lists of connection identifiers sorted in, for example, ascending order based on time of connection establishment in the forward direction, and in descending order based on time of connection establishment in the backward direction. In another embodiment, transmission order is determined by sorting arriving data packets at the time of their corresponding connection identifiers, wherein the forward and backward sorting rules are selected so that a sum of a forward transmission delay limit and a backward transmission delay limit is less than or equal to a round-trip delay bound for each connection.

Abstract: A determination whether to establish a new connection that will supply new variable bit rate data packets to be transmitted in a shared system for transmitting variable bit rate data packets is made by determining, for the new connection, a value of a moment generating function defined based on the number of possible data packet sizes for the new connection, (Ri, Pi) pairs representing possible new connection data packet sizes, Ri, with corresponding assigned probabilities, Pi, and .theta. is an arbitrary positive real number. A determination is then made whether any value of .theta. exists that satisfies the Chernoff bound for all established connections and the new connection, given a length of a buffer for storing data packets supplied to the shared system for transmitting variable bit rate data packets, and a predefined packet loss rate that can be tolerated in the shared system for transmitting variable bit rate data packets. If a value of .theta. exists that satisfies the Chernoff bound, then the new connection is established, else it is rejected. In another aspect, a maximum number of connections in the shared system is determined, given a transmission rate of the shared system.

Abstract: In a telecommunication system that generates more than one type of communication data stream, in which each data stream exhibits a distinctive data transfer format, bandwidth utilization is improved by first reformatting the different data tansfer formats so that all of the data is compatible with a common data transfer protocol, for example, the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) protocol. The communication data and the corresponding control data, required to maintain communication data alignment, are multiplexed into a single data stream which is then transmitted over a common telecommunication channel to a receiving station.
