Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for synchronising at least one node (N1-N4) in a net (n), which node (N1-N4) is used as an exampl e for packet oriented transmission. A server (C), generating a stable frequenc y (fs), and the node (N1-N4) measures the number of cycles of the stable frequency (fs) respective the number of cycles of a local frequency (f1-f4), generated by the node (N1-N4). These measurements are started respective stopped at the instant of time when a phase of a signal, generated by a powe r network (PN) connected to the server (C) and the node (N1-N4), equals zero. The results of the measurements are compared and the node (N1-N4) is adjuste d accordingly. Measurements can continuously be performed by the server (C) an d the node (N1-N4).

Abstract: In a packet communication system, the delay time needed in a jitter buffer is determined, enabling a smooth data feed to an application without excessive delays, by methods and apparatus that vary the size of the jitter buffer based on an estimated variation of packet transmission delay derived from the times of arrival of stored packets. A variance buffer stores variances of the times of arrival of stored packets, and the estimated variation of packet transmission delay is derived from the stored variances. The size of the jitter buffer can be changed preferentially during periods of discontinuous packet transmission.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for providing each terminal (t1, t2, t) in a network (n) with an adapted location area (HAt1, HAt2, FAs, FApt), customised to the long term or short term historical movements or behaviour of the terminal (t1, t2, t) in the network (n). The terminal (t1, t2, t) can enter three different modes; session mode, packet mode and transaction mode, which controls what kind of location area (HAt1, HAt2, FAs, FApt) the terminal (t1, t2, t) should use. The types of location areas are a home location area (HAt1, HAt2), based on the long term historical movements of the terminal (t1, t2, t) and used when the terminal (t1, t2, t) is located inside a home area constituting the normal mobility pattern of the terminal in the network (n), a session mode-fast adaptive location area (FAs), used when the terminal (t1, t2, t) enters the session mode and is located outside the home area, and a packet mode/transaction mode-fast adaptive location area (FApt), used for burstlike traffic when the terminal (t1, t2, t) enters the packet mode or the transaction mode.
