Abstract: An aqueous polymer dispersion which is suitable for the preparation of paints having high wet adhesion is prepared by copolymerisation in aqueous medium of vinyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic acids in the presence of an olefinically unsaturated acetoacetate. The vinyl ester employed is vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate and/or vinyl isobutyrate together with vinyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic acids having 5 to 20 carbon atoms whose carboxyl group is bonded to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom. The resultant dispersions are suitable for the preparation of gloss emulsion paints having high wet adhesion to non-sorptive substrates and have high resistance to hydrolysis.

Abstract: The preparation of aqueous polymer dispersions containing vinyl ester polymers or vinyl ester copolymers and having reduced contents of undesired residual monomeric vinyl esters present as a consequence of the preparation and possibly of undesired acetaldehyde from corresponding starting dispersions, as are obtainable by conventional polymerisation or copolymerisation methods from ethylenically unsaturated monomers, by selective alkaline saponification (hydrolysis) of the residual monomeric vinyl esters which can be saponified under alkaline conditions, and, if appropriate, oxidation of the acetaldehyde to acetic acid in the aqueous dispersions. The use of the polymer dispersions as binders in low-emission or emission-free aqueous preparations, for example for paint coats, coatings, plaster, adhesives, paper sizes, fibre nonwoven binders, textile assistants, etc., in particular indoor applications or applications in closed spaces.
