Abstract: A display comprising a cathode ray display tube (1) having an electromagnetic deflection yoke (2) is described. A pair of first deflection coils (7,6) are located symmetrically about the longitudinal axis of the tube (1) on opposite sides of the yoke (2) for producing within the tube (1) a first magnetic deflection field. A pair of second deflection coils (8,20) are similarly located symmetrically about the longitudinal axis on opposite sides of the yoke (2) for producing within the tube (1) a second magnetic deflection field at right angles to the first deflection field. The display is further provided with a pair of first cancellation coils (4,3) connected to the first deflection coils (7,6) for producing a first cancellation field which tends to cancel a first stray field produced by the first deflection coils (7,6). Support means (10,11) secure the first cancellation coils symmetrically about the longitudinal axis. The display additionally comprises a pair of second cancellation coils (50,32) coupled to the second deflection coils (8,20) for producing a second cancellation field which tends to cancel a second stray field produced by the second deflection coils (8,20). Further support means (51,52) are provided for positioning the second cancellation coils (50,32) symmetrically about the longitudinal axis in such a way that a plane containing a second cancellation coil (50) is perpendicular to any plane containing a first cancellation coil (4). Preferably, the display also comprises control means (64) for generating a predetermined cancellation current in the second cancellation coils (50,32) in response to a particular second deflection current in the second deflection coils (8,20).

Abstract: A display device comprises a screen. A back plate is sealed to the screen to form an evacuated chamber. Area cathode means is disposed between the back plate and the screen. A permanent magnet is disposed between the cathode and the screen. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode means. An anode phosphor layer is disposed between screen and the magnet for receiving electrons from the channels. Grid electrode means between the area cathode means and the magnet controls flow of electrons from the cathode means into the channels. Anode means between the magnet and the anode phosphor layer controls flow of electrons from the channels towards the screen. In one such arrangement, the screen comprises a layer of a plastic material. In another such arrangement a plurality of spacers are disposed between the screen and the magnet. Each spacer has an elongate body having a larger cross sectional area at one end of the spacer tapering to a smaller cross sectional area at the other end of the spacer. In another such arrangement, and a plurality of spacers are disposed between the magnet and cathode. The spacers are located in recesses formed in the grid electrode means. In yet another such arrangement, the cathode means comprises a back-plate and a silica glass substrate peripherally sealed to the back-plate to produce a chamber. A gas is contained in the chamber. A layer of photo-sensitive material is disposed on the surface of the substrate external to the chamber. A cathode phosphor layer is disposed between the back plate and the substrate. A pair of electrodes facing each other from opposite sides of the chamber energises the gas to generate a plasma for exciting the phosphor to generate light energy to produce electron emissions from the photo-cathode.

Abstract: A display device comprises a cathode and a permanent magnet. A two dimensional array of rows and columns of channels extends between opposite poles of the magnet for receiving electrons from the cathode. A screen has a plurality of phosphor pixels each corresponding to a different channel and each comprising a plurality of sub-pixels facing the side of the magnet remote from the cathode. Grid electrode means is disposed between the cathode means and the magnet. A plurality of pairs of anodes are disposed between the magnet and the screen and extending parallel to the columns of channels. Each pair corresponds to a different column of channels and each pair has first and second anodes extending along opposite sides of the corresponding column of channels. Address means supplies control signals to the grid electrode means to selectively control flow of electrons from the cathode through each channel to the corresponding pixel. An anode drive circuit supplies anode drive signals to the first and second anodes respectively. The anode drive circuit comprises bias means for generating an acceleration component of each anode drive signal for accelerating electrons through the channels, deflection means for generating a deflection component of each anode drive signal for deflecting electrons emerging from each channel towards different sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel, and correction means for varying the deflection component to align the deflected electron beams with the corresponding sub-pixels.

Abstract: A vacuum electron device 10, e.g. a diode, triode, synchrotron, magnetron, cyclotron, CRT or electron beam lithography apparatus, is provided with a sensor electrode 40 to monitor electron beam current. The sensor may be a plate, e.g. of tapering shape, which intercepts part of the beam to monitor the current directly, or may be an element which responds indirectly to a magnetic field induced by the beam current. A signal representing the sensed current can be used in a feedback circuit 110,120,130 to adjust the potential on cathode 20 and/or the grid 70 to stabilise the beam current. The cathode may be a thermionic cathode, a photocathode, a field emission cathode or a metalinsulator-metal cathode, the feedback circuit compensating for the effects of cathode ageing. A magnetic matrix display device embodying the invention is described in which the plane cathode is divided into a plurality of selectively actuable strips.
