Abstract: A disk storage device in which two or more discrete disk velocities are used is disclosed. The disk velocity is selected using operating environmental conditions. Various types of sensors may be used to detect the environmental conditions or the environmental conditions may be input by a user. The allocation of track locations on a disk into zones reduces the number of zone bit frequencies the storage device must handle when multiple frequency zones are used in connection with the various spindle speeds.

Abstract: A secondary data storage system for a host computer system includes a disk drive system having a device controller, at least a first magnetic disk and a read/write magnetic transducer positionable with respect to a recording surface of each magnetic disk. A write operation exposes data on adjacent tracks to potential damage if an off track condition occurs to the transducer during a write. A method for controlling write operations through the device controller provides backup of data in tracks adjacent to a target track for the write operation prior to the write operation occurring. The method detects occurrence of events resulting in an off track condition of the magnetic transducer relative to a target track. Occurrence of such an event triggers a determination of damage to the contents of tracks adjacent to the target track and restoration of those tracks. Write operations to the target track are blocked until shock events discontinue.

Abstract: A dual element (80a,80b) magnetoresistive (MR) head (80) is positioned relative to a storage medium (24) in a storage device (20). The MR head (80) has first and second MR elements (80a,80b). The storage medium (24) is mounted in the storage device (20) to allow relative movement between the MR head (80) and the storage medium (24). The storage medium (24) includes servo information (106,108) provided to induce first and second thermal responses (211,213) in the MR elements (80a,80b). A controller (250) is coupled to the MR head (80) and controls the relative movement between the MR head (80) and the storage medium (24) using the first and second thermal responses (211,213) in the MR elements (80a,80b).

Abstract: A magnetic disk drive includes redundant data written at a plurality of out of phase angular locations to reduce the latency and enhance performance during a read operation. The loss of recording capacity is reduced by increasing the data density to achieve the same soft error rate standard required for single recording. Dual recording also allows different recording codes to be used at the duplicated locations to thereby have the more highly stressed code words occur at different locations in the data to further reduce the possibility of an error. The redundant recording can be used in one portion of the media and normal recording used in another media portion to enable selection of the recording technique in accordance with the type of data being stored. The size of the normal and redundant recording portions can be controlled by the format operation and the user of the disk drive can intervene to designate the size of the redundant and normal media recording portions effected during the format operation.

Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus and method for correcting for track misregistration when a slider or head assembly contains a separate read element (40) and write element (42). Basically, the offset is determined at a first position and at a second position of the actuator arm (48) assembly. From these offsets a constant and a multiplier are determined for determining an offset as a function of the cylinder location. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for minimizing distance traveled to prevent misregistration when repositioning between the read element and a write element. The read element is intentionally offset from the write element at an angle so as to minimize the distance traveled across the disk.

Abstract: A method and system includes digitally linearizing a digital output signal originating from a magnetoresistive sensor by detecting the digital output signal originating from the magnetoresistive sensor. A linearization factor is then correlated to the digital output signal. Then, the digital output signal is modified the linearization factor to linearize the digital output signal.

Abstract: A digital output signal originating from a magnetoresistive sensor 200 is digitally linearized by detecting the digital output signal originating from the magnetoresistive sensor and selecting one of a plurality of linearization factors correlated to the output signal. The linearization factors may be derived from a look-up table 214. The sensor 200 may be a read head of a disk drive system. In an arrangement with multiple heads, it is possible to equalise the gain of each head. It is also possible to maintain the gain constant regardless of changes in head or disk characteristics.

Abstract: Rotary actuator arc compensation correction method and apparatus are provided for a direct access storage device (DASD). A reference feedforward correction signal (64) is generated at each of a plurality of sectors around a predetermined track on a disk surface. A specific selected track is identified, and both magnitude and phase of the generated reference feedforward correction signal are modified to correct for the arced trajectory caused by the rotary actuator (58) at the specific selected track. Improved actuator servo control is provided by using pseudo sector compensation to interpolate the feedforward correction signal between servo sectors.
