    SOLUTION: The birefringence of the film or the sheet comprising the specific cyclic olefin addition polymer is reduced by exposing the film or the sheet to an atmosphere of a solvent (I) dissolving at 25°C the cyclic olefin addition polymer. This method gives the film or the sheet of the cyclic olefin polymer for the optical material having a reduced birefringence, that is, having a birefringence, measured at the time of perpendicular incidence of a light ray having a wavelength of 622nm, reduced to at most 10nm in terms of 200μm thickness.
