Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the subject sizing agent comprising an aqueous dispersion containing a specific ketene dimer and a specified water-soluble mixture, having a zeta potential within a prescribed range, excellent compatibility and sliding- preventing property, and useful for pulp, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective sizing agent comprises a water dispersion having (A) a ketene dimer of the formula (R1, R2 are 8-24C hydrocarbon) and (B) a water-soluble mixture comprising a processed starch (e.g. a low mol.wt. starch produced by treating tapioca starch with hydrochloric acid) having a total colloid equivalent of -15.0 to +0.05meq/g and an anionic polycondensation product (e.g. styrene-maleic acid copolymer) and having a Brookfield viscosity of 2-100 poises measured in a 3wt.% aqueous solution at 30 deg.C and has a zeta potential zeta of -30 to +5mV. The sizing agent is preferably used for sizing the surface of paper.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the staining of a paper-making apparatus and the costs of chemicals and improve the operation of the apparatus by employing a specific ketene dimer-based sizing agent which is extremely stable against head and mechanical shear forces and which does not prevent the effect of an anionic dye. CONSTITUTION:A method for sizing the surface of paper comprises employing an aqueous dispersion which has a zeta-potential of -30 to 15mV and which contains a dispersant consisting of (A) a ketene dimer of the formula (R1, R2 are 8-22C alkyl, alkenyl, aryl) and (B) a water-soluble composite material which contains a cation-anion complex comprising the mixture of a cationic starch having a colloid equivalent of 0.05-1meq/g and an anionic polymer and whose 3wt.% aqueous solution has a Brookfield viscosity of 2-100 centipoises at 30 deg.C. Examples of the cationic starch constituting the component B include the reaction produce of corn starch with 3-diethylamino-1,2-epoxypropane. Examples of the anionic polymer include sodium polymaleate.
