Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an optical fiber Bragg grating comprises a length of gloss optical fiber having a core, a Bragg grating formed along the core, a glass cladding and a polymer coating on the cladding havin g an index of refraction matched to that the cladding. Such index matching can reduce the cladding mode loss by a factor of four over current levels. A preferred coating material comprises fluorinated urethane acrylate.

Abstract: A refractive index grating according to this invention is a tilted grating in a single mode optical waveguide, with a photosensitivity profile that includes at least one "tuning region" in the waveguide core (41). Appropriate choice of the photosensitivity profile, e.g. an annular tuning region (51) with low concentration of photosensitizing species, can result in a "supernull" in the LP01.f to LP01.b coupling. That is to say, the angular range of the tilt angle &thetas; over which the core mode coupling is essentially zero (i.e., 20dB) and bandwidth (>20nm). A method of trimming a grating is also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention is predicated on applicants' discovery that an appropriately spaced and dimensioned internal gap cladding can substantially reduce short wavelength cladding mode loss in a fiber Bragg grating. A fiber Bragg grating is provided with a ring of closely spaced, longitudinally extending gap regions in the glass peripherally surrounding the core. The gaps are spaced apart by thin glass webs having a thickness less than a wavelength of the light being transmitted and are disposed peripherally abou t the core at a distance of 2-10 wavelengths from the core center. The thin webs limit the passage of the light between the gaps. The combination of webs and gaps acts as an internal thin cladding which supports fewer cladding modes than conventional glass cladding and, significantly, provides increased wavelength spacing between the Bragg resonance and the first cladding made resonance.

Abstract: A method for making a chirped grating device capable of a broad bandwith for optical communication systems is disclosed. An intrinsically-chirped optical grating is externally strained to alter the range of chirping. The external strain may be induced by a gradient-generating body bonded onto the length of the fiber grating that may be latchably strained so that the grating characteristics may be changed or tuned while avoiding use of a continuous power supply. Various optical networking applications using such dispersion compensating devices are also disclosed.

Abstract: A fiber Raman amplifier is configured to use a co-propagating Raman pum p source, which may be beneficial in a variety of system configurations (for example, in bidirectional communication systems). By carefully configuring the pump sour ce characteristics, sufficient optical gain can be achieved in the co-propagati ng arrangement, the characteristics including: (1) using an optical pump power of at least 50mW, (2) having a relatively large spectral bandwidth within the pump (to suppress SBS); and (3) a frequency difference between all longitudinal pump modes of each pump laser being separated by at least the walk-off frequency between the pu mp laser frequency and the signal frequency, and all intense longitudinal modes betwe en different pump lasers being separated by at least the electrical bandwidth o f the communication system.
