Abstract: An optical fiber communication system (40) according to the invention comprises an optical fiber filter that can be manufactured at low cost and that can be conveniently incorporated into the system, substantially like a conventional fiber jumper. The filter comprises a length L of axially uniform optical fiber selected to have substantially no loss (e.g., 1 , and to have relatively high loss (e.g.,> 20dB) at a wavelength λ 2 . The length L will typically be less than 100 m. In one embodiment the optical fiber is a single mode optical fiber at λ 1 (e.g., 1.3µm) that does not have a guided mode at λ 2 (e.g., 1.55µm). In another embodiment the fiber contains a dopant that does substantially not absorb radiation of wavelength λ 1 , but substantially absorbs at λ 2 . In the second embodiment, λ 1 can be greater than λ 2 . Fiber filters according to the invention can be advantageously used in a variety of communication systems, and exemplary systems are disclosed.

Abstract: A large optical preform Ä303Ü is made by a modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) process by depositing successive layers of core and cladding materials onto the inside surface of a rotating glass tube Ä33Ü having a hydroxyl ion (OH ) level that is less than 0.5 parts per million (ppm) by weight. The tube is then collapsed inwardly to form a core rod Ä301Ü in which the deposited core material Ä31Ü has a diameter that is greater than about 5 millimeters and the deposited cladding material Ä32Ü has an outside diameter that is less than about 15 millimeters. Optionally a machine-vision system Ä140,150,160Ü monitors and controls the diameter of the glass tube by regulating the pressure within the tube; moreover, the machine-vision system monitors and controls the straightness of the tube by varying its rotational speed according to angular position. After the core rod Ä301Ü is formed, it may be plasma etched to remove contaminants, it is overclad with two glass jackets Ä34,35Ü having a hydroxyl ion (OH ) level that is less than 1.0 ppm by weight thereby creating a large preform Ä303Ü from which about 400 kilometers of singlemode optical fiber can be drawn per meter of length of preform.

Abstract: A low noise optical fiber Raman amplifier (FRA) comprises an upstream and a downstream length (23, 24) of silica-based amplifier fiber, of combined length >200 m, typically >1 km, with an optical isolator (25) disposed between the upstream and downstream lengths of amplifier fiber such that passage of backscattered signal radiation from the latter to the former is substantially blocked. In preferred embodiments counter-propagating pump radiation is coupled into the downstream length of amplifier fiber, and wavelength-selective means (26, 27) are provided for shunting the pump radiation around the optical isolator. The described FRA is advantageously incorporated into optical fiber communication systems. Exemplarily it can serve as power amplifier, as pre-amplifier, or as in-line amplifier. For instance, it can be used to replace conventional opto-electronic repeaters in existing 1.3 mu m fiber communication systems, or it can be used as power amplifier in a multi-subscriber optical fiber CATV system. In a still further exemplary embodiment, the FRA is used as a distributed pre-amplifier in a remotely pumped fiber communication system.

Abstract: The apparatus includes an optical fibre path of silica-based amplifier fibre that connects an input port and an output port, and a pump radiation input via WDM (13). The pump radiation is introduced at a wavelength lambda p less than a signal wavelength lambda s into the amplifier fibre such that it propagates in the fibre in an upstream direction towards the input port. Provided with the amplifier fibre is at least two lengths of fibre (L1,L2), with the sum of both lengths being at least 200m. An optical isolator is disposed between the two lengths such that passage of radiation of wavelength lambda s from the second to the first length is blocked. The pump path is closed upon itself and includes a portion of the amplifier fibre, the path selected such that the initial pump radiation can circulate in it. A second pump radiation of wavelength lambda p?'lambda p may be introduced into the pump path and a Bragg grating blocks its passage. Selected and placed Bragg gratings provide one or more optical cavities in the fibre ring, such that the input pump radiation is converted to the desired amplifier pump radiation. The wavelength lambda s may be 1310 nm, lambda p 1240 nm, and lambda p?' 1060 nm.

Abstract: An optical communication system comprising a light source, a cladding pumped fiber laser (10) having a pump cladding (14), an optical fiber (20) attached to the cladding pumped fiber laser, the optical fiber having a cladding (24) and a protective coating (26). and an expedient that prevents substantial damage to the protective coating of the optical fiber upon transmission of at least 1 watt of residual light out of the pump cladding. Such an expedient may be the material of the protective coating, which may comprise a metal, such as gold, aluminium or copper, or a high refractive-index polymer such as a polyimide, polyetheretherketone, polytetrafluoroethene or an epoxide. Alternatively, or in addition, the expedient may comprise an article disposed at the attachment of the laser to the fiber and capable of conducting and dissipating heat produced by the residual light, for example, a metal block having a groove that supports the laser, the fiber or both.
