Abstract:
Binary optics are used in an illumination system for a color projection display. In one embodiment a broad spectrum light source illuminates a multilevel optical phase element which disperses the broad spectrum light from the light source by diffraction. A display having a number of pixel elements, each capable of transmitting a predetermined spectral region, is positioned within the near field region of the multilevel optical phase element so as to receive the light dispersed by the multilevel phase element.
Abstract:
A method and system for processing two input digital image signals, each being representative of a different two dimensional view of the same scene, to produce three processed image signals. A center-surround shunt processor transforms each input image signal to produce a respective processed image signal. Another center-surround shunt processor produces the third processed image signal from the first two processed image signals. In the latter processor, one of the first two processed image signals is selected as a center image and the other is selected as a surround image. The processor performs a computation associated with each pixel in the center image with data selected from the center image to form a central element for the computation and data selected from the surround image to form a surround element for the computation. The result of each computation is a pixel of the third processed image signal. The three processed image signals may be applied to the respective RGB inputs of an RGB display device.

Abstract:
A quadrature sampling system and method (BQS) and a hybrid quadrature sampling and channel equalization system and method (BQS/EQ) which convert input signals to baseband inphase and quadrature signal components. The BQS system includes an inphase signal channel including a first set of K filters, and a signal summer which sums the outputs of the first set of K filters to produce the inphase signal component; a quadrature signal channel including a second set of K filters, and a signal summer which sums the outputs of the second set of K filters to produce the quadrature signal component; and a controlled switch which provides input samples to the inphase and quadrature signal channels so that each filter of both channels receives one input sample of each sequence. The BQS/EQ system includes first and second sets of signal processing filter pairs, each pair including an inphase and a quadrature filter. A controlled switch alternately switches input samples between the first and second sets of signal processing filter pairs and applies selected ones of the input samples to each filter pair so that each filter pair receives one input sample of each sequence. The outputs of the filter pairs of each set are selectively provided to the inphase and quadrature signal summers.

A method for stably introducing exogenous DNA into the germ line of a fish is described. A fish embryo is provided. A retroviral vector is introduced into a cell of the fish embryo, and the fish embryo is allowed to develop into a fish. Stable chromosomal insertions of the retroviral vector are screened for. Transgenic fish, cells and cell lines are also provided.
Abstract:
Two distinct scavenger receptor type proteins having high affinity for modified lipoproteins and other ligands have been isolated, characterized and cloned. HaSR-BI, an AcLDL and LDL binding scavenger receptor, which is distinct from the type I and type II macrophage scavenger receptors, has been isolated and characterized and DNA encoding the receptor cloned from a variant of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, designated Var-261. dSR-CI, a non-mammalian AcLDL binding scavenger receptor having high ligand affinity and broad specificity, was isolated from Drosophila melanogaster. The isolated receptors are useful in screening for drugs that inhibit uptake of cholesterol in endothelial or adipose cells or macrophages, respectively. They are also useful as probes for the isolation of other lipoprotein receptors and in research the roles of these receptors.
Abstract:
A free rotor (302) is mounted to spin freely in a conduit network (308) that is acoustically coupled to a noise source through a working fluid that flows through the conduit network. The free rotor muffles the acoustic perturbations travelling through the conduit network, thus effectively muffling the noise source. The network has at least one extent of conduit and within the extent of conduit, the free rotor is typically mounted with its axis of rotation parallel to the direction of flow of the working fluid. Additional free muffling rotors may be provided, either counter rotating or rotating in the same direction. If adjacent free rotors rotate in the same direction, it is beneficial to provide a stationary blade row (306) between them. The multiple free rotors may be mounted on the same spindle, or mounted on independent spindles. The parameters of the free rotor are typically sized relative to the elements and environment of the conduit network such that: f> rho AuxR /2 pi J, where J is the free rotor rotational inertia, R is the mean radius of the free rotor, ux is the mass flow of fluid in the conduit, f is the lowest frequency of any acoustic vibration in the conduit to be muffled and A is the cross-sectional flow area of the free rotor.
Abstract:
A laser resonant cavity (10) defined by a set of reflective end elements (26) positioned to together form a closed optical path, a gain medium (12) positioned along the closed optical path, means (14) for exciting the gain medium to produce a laser beam within the cavity, at least one focusing element (24) positioned within the cavity in optical alignement with the gain medium, and a prism (26) positioned as one of the end elements of the cavity and providing angular dispersion of the laser beam. The prism, end elements, gain medium, and focusing elements are positioned with respect to each other such that the resonant cavity supports a coexistence of several monochromatic laser modes, each mode having a distinct propagation axis. Propagation axes of modes having relatively longer wavelengths traverse more of the prism than propagation axes of modes having relatively shorter wavelengths, resulting in the addition of a negative component to the group velocity dispersion of the laser cavity. The invention provides group velocity dispersion compensation using one or more prismatic end elements without the need for any additional intracavity elements whose sole purpose is dispersion compensation.
