    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain aryl aromatic carboxylates in high selectivity by the coexistence of a protonic acid or a solid acid in reacting phenols with an aromatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a tin compound-based esterification catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Phenols are reacted with an aromatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a tin compound-based esterification catalyst (an organotin compound is especially preferred) to provide aryl aromatic carboxylates. In the process, high selectivity is attained by the coexistence of a protonic acid or a solid acid (hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, heteropoly acid, p-toluenesulfonic acid, silica, alumina, etc., are especially preferred). An aromatic dicarboxylic acid, especially terephthalic acid is preferably used as the aromatic carboxylic acid to produce a diester.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound at low cost both in high conversion and selectivity by direct reduction, in the presence of a palladium catalyst, of easily available p-isopropylphenol using an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon as solvent. CONSTITUTION:The objective 4-isopropylcyclohexanone can be obtained by reducing p-isopropylphenol with hydrogen in the presence of a palladium catalyst in an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon solvent such as toluene, xylene or mesitylene. This process can be accomplished in a liquid phase under a mild condition, and the raw materials to be used are easily available, thus being industrially advantageous. The present compound is useful as an intermediate for producing polymers, medicines, perfumes, etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently produce an acyl group-substituted aromatic compound useful as an agricultural chemical, photographic chemical, UV absorber, etc., by reacting an aromatic compound with carboxylic acids using a highly active fluorine-containing aromatic sulfonic acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic compound expressed by formula II (R is H, alkyl, alkoxy or halogen: (m) is 1-3; both P and Q are H, either thereof is phenyl and the other is H or both are hydrocarbons required to link and form naphthalene or tetralin ring) is reacted with carboxylic acids using a fluorine-containing aromatic sulfonic acid catalyst expressed by formula I (X is F or 1-14C fluorine- containing alkyl which may contain ethereal oxygen atom; Ar is aryl; (n) is 1-5; (m) is 1-3) as a catalyst to afford an acyl group-substituted aromatic compound (e.g. methylbenzophenone). A high yield can be attained by using the aforementioned catalyst even if water is present in the reaction system.
