Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an indane derivative in high yield without causing side reactions such as sulfonation by reacting a benzene derivative with isoprene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst such as an inorganic solid acid catalyst or proton type strongly acidic ion exchange resin. CONSTITUTION:A compound expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are H or 1-4C alkyl) is blended with isoprene in the presence of a solid acid catalyst and polymerization inhibitor (0.01-1wt.% based on isoprene) for 1-10hr and the blend is reacted further for 1.4 hr at 80-150 deg.C to provide the compound expressed by formula II. An inorganic solid acid catalyst such as silica alumina, bentonite or zeolite or a proton type ion exchange resin such as a perfluoroalkanesulfonic acid type resin are used as the solid acid catalyst at an amount of 0.5-2.0 times by weight based on isoprene. The above-mentioned method is easy in handling and the catalyst can be re-used, because the catalyst is a solid catalyst and a sulfonated by-product is not produced and cooling energy is not required, because sulfuric acid is not used.
