    Abstract: A mobile communication system (100) includes an infrastructure which includes a plurality of base stations (103, 104), a plurality of mobile stations each of which is operable to communicate with a selected one of the base stations, a mobile terminal (108) operably coupled to at least a first one (106) of the mobile stations and a second one (107) of the mobile stations to provide a communication link to at least one of the base stations, and a mobile controller (110) which is operable to send instruction messages to the mobile stations regarding connectivity with the base stations. The mobile terminal, the mobile controller and the first and second mobile stations may be carried on a moving object such as a person or a vehicle, e.g. train or aeroplane. The mobile controller may make decisions and issue instructions to the mobile stations relating to the base station by which they should each be served with the objective of maintaining a communication link between the mobile terminal and a serving base station via at least one of the mobile stations. Also disclosed are a mobile controller, a mobile station and a method of operation for use in the system.

    Abstract: In a typical cellular network, when a call is received at a gateway, the gateway will be connected to the HLR (Home Location Register) which allows the call to be routed to a mobile subscriber. In an ad-hoc (e.g. TETRA or private) network however, the network layout may be constantly changing, and so the gateway may not be connected to a HLR which causes a delay in routing the call to a subscriber. This problem is solved by providing a look up table at each node (base station) which holds the location of the node which contains the HLR for each subscriber. Therefore, at each node when a subscriber registers there will be a pointer to the node which contains the HLR for the subscriber. Also, each HLR is assigned a node which has a link to a gateway.

    Abstract: A method of controlling location information of subscribers 210, 212, 222 in a wireless, ad-hoc communications network 200. The network 200 comprises a plurality of nodes (base stations) 204, 216, 226 wherein each of the nodes has a Visitor Location Register (VLR) 208, 220, 230 and at least a portion of the nodes are provided with Home Location Registers (HLRs) 206, 218 228. When an operation of a first node 216 is to be reconfigured, for example, due to the addition of a new node or disconnection or movement of the first node 216, at least a part of the records from a first HLR 218 assigned to the first node 216 is transferred to at least one of the other nodes 226 of the network 200. The transfer is preferably controlled by a control unit which selects the target node(s) 226 and creates a back-up copy of the first HLR 218 which can be used if an error occurs during the transfer. Depending on circumstances, all or only part of the HLR records can be transferred and the transferred records can be assigned to a new HLR at the target node(s), which may or may not already have a HLR, or merged with records in a HLR already at the target node(s).

Furthermore, the shared key may relate to any type of transmission, such as an emergency group call, pre-emptive priority call, an encrypted broadcast call or any other mobile radio communication where encryption is used. The system is operable in a direct mode of operation (DMO) and the manner of combining the individual identifier with a shared key can be changed, the change being notified to other users of the shared key.

    Abstract: In a mobile communications system in which mobile radio transmitters and receivers communicate through an infrastructure including base stations and switching networks, the infrastructure is arranged to recognise signal delays. In response to a delay situation a message is sent to the receiving mobile informing it of a synchronisation error. The message may indicate that a received frame has been lost, that resynchronisation is required when the next synchronisation sequence is transmitted or that there is a synchronisation lag of N frames. The infrastructure can also send a message to the transmitting mobile instructing it to send a new synchronisation sequence value. The infrastructure also adds a step to the Just-In-Time-Audio (JITA) algorithm to avoid any extra delay being introduced into the transmission stream until the next synchronisation sequence is available.
