    Abstract: A multi-frequency band antenna ( 100 ) includes a dual-pitch coil ( 120, 130 ), and a top insert ( 140 ), operably coupled to an antenna base ( 105 ). The multi-frequency band antenna ( 100 ) is configured to radiate electromagnetic signals at a lower frequency 230 ) of multi-frequencies using substantially the whole of the dual-pitch coil ( 120, 130 ); and at a higher frequency ( 240 ) of said multi-frequencies using a length of said antenna base ( 105, 110 ) and a portion of said dual-pitch coil ( 120 ). A first portion of the dual-pitch coil has a longer pitch than a second portion of the coil and the first portion has a first end attached to the antenna base and a second end attached to the second portion, and the second portion has an effective electrical length substantially equal to a wavelength (lambda) of radiation having a frequency corresponding to a frequency in the second band.

    Abstract: A wireless subscriber communication unit ( 200 ) comprises an antenna arrangement ( 202, 330, 430 ) for radiating and/or receiving electromagnetic signals. A transmitter ( 220 ) and/or a receiver ( 210 ) is/are operably coupled to the antenna arrangement ( 202, 330, 430 ), for transmitting/receiving a radio signal. An antenna arrangement comprises an internal antenna located within the wireless communication unit ( 200 ) and an external antenna located substantially outside of the wireless communication unit, such that both the internal antenna ( 330, 430 ) and the external antenna ( 202 ) co-operate on substantially the same electromagnetic signal. In this manner, by provision of both an internal and an external antenna the wireless subscriber communication unit is able to function adequately should an antenna become disconnected, malfunction, or its performance suffer from impedance mismatching. Preferably, the internal and external antennas can be configured to be orthogonal to one another, thereby providing the wireless subscriber unit with the ability to operate with a substantially circular or elliptical polarization.

    Abstract: The onset of power amplifier compression during closed-loop level training of an RF transmitter is more readily detected by using a nonlinear input test waveform 203 which in conjunction with the dominant pole of the loop filter (113, figure 1) provides a substantially flat loop error signal 303 until compression occurs. The onset of compression produces a rise in the loop error signal 303 which is more distinct than the rise in the loop error signal 301 apparent when a linear ramp is used. Training may be performed during CLCH slots in a TETRA system.

    Abstract: A linearised transmitter 400 has a power amplifier 412, a forward path and a feedback path for feeding back a portion of the output signal. During loop phase training, a processor opens the feedback switches 424 and 426, applies phase training signals to the inputs 402,430, and switches low pass filters 490,492 into the feedback path. The filters remove wideband noise that may be introduced by an interfering nearby transmitter and so improve the precision of loop phase adjustment applied to the phase shifter 442. A linearised transmitter integrated circuit is described. The transmitter may be used in TETRA equipment, mobile phones, or private mobile radios.

    Abstract: A multiple radio frequency (RF) band antenna arrangement 1100 comprises plural resonators 1103, 1105, 1109 formed from a plurality of conductive wires where the wires are mutually adjacent. The arrangement includes plural RF channels, each of which provides RF signals between a respective radio unit and a respective resonator. At least three of the wire elements have different lengths. The wire elements provide RF signals in at least two different frequency bands. The wire elements may comprise straight 1109 and/or folded 1103 and/or branched 1105 and/or helical monopole resonator elements. The wire resonator elements may be arranged in a parallel manner with a regular base configuration on a circuit board such that they can be located within a single elongate casing. Electrical connections to the wire elements may be made using a plug and socket connector arrangement. The wire resonator elements may include elements which are driven via parasitic coupling with other elements. Each of the RF feed channels may include a control device which can switch between short and open circuit conditions for signals at frequencies outside that of the intended resonator. The arrangement is intended to provide a lightweight, compact antenna configuration which can operate efficiently in at least two widely separate broad frequency bands.
