A flip element (104) which contains a microphone and covers a keypad (110) and other control buttons when in a closed position also activates a hookswitch (306). When the hookswitch and microprocessor indicate that the flip element is in a closed position, the on/off switch cannot be activated to turn the portable radiotelephone on or off and switches which control volume level are deactivated.

    Abstract: A radiotelephone system is comprised of a fixed site (120, Fig. 1) and a radiotelephone-pair (420) suitably intercoupled (436, 440, 444) theretogether to permit transfer of data, such as number assignment module (NAM) information, therebetween. A first (426 or 432) of the radiotelephone-pair comprises a radiotelephone of conventional construction using conventional band width. A second radiotelephone (432 or 426) of the radiotelephone-pair comprises a radiotelephone having circuitry to transmit more efficiently an information signal upon a cellular, communication system of increased capacity. The data sequence contained in a first radiotelephone of the pair is transferred to a second radiotelephone of the pair to permit a communication link to be formed between the second radiotelephone and a cellular, communication network. Thus a portable (426) may be used independently at off-peak-times, and intercoupled with a mobile (432) at peak times to make use of increased capacity but using the same NAM information as the portable. Only one NAM is thus required giving increased capacity at minimal cost.

    Abstract: A radio arrangement and method allows a portable (210) and a mobile (212) to uniquely communicate on a radio system having at least one remote system site (114). The portable (210) has at least one information set (such as the radio's identification information and repertory dialing information) (356 or 360), and the mobile (212) is intercoupled therewith via a connector (214). The connector is used for transferring a code, which designates the information set, from the portable (2101 to the mobile (212), whereby the mobile (212) adopts the information set of the portable (210) for subsequent communication. The arrangement offers an user having a portable, with it limited features and functions, to utilize all of the capabilities of the mobile.
