Abstract: A radiotelephone subscriber unit which overcomes the problem of attempting to access an undesired radiotelephone system is disclosed. A comparison between the system identification transmitted on a control channel of a desired radiotelephone system and the system identification transmitted on an access channel is made during the access process of the subscriber unit. Access is permitted if the control channel system identification and the access channel system identification match.

Abstract: A portable radiotelephone with a keypad, alphanumeric character display, and hands free function is disclosed. A movable flip element of the housing covers a keypad and other control buttons when in a closed, on-hook, position and activates the illumination of the keypad, enables the display, and enables the hands free function when in an open, off-hook, position. The duration of keypad illumination and display activation are timed to reduce battery drain and the hands free function may be deactivated with a hookswitch flash.

Abstract: A dual mode cellular cordless portable radiotelephone (101) preferentially selects the cordless base station (115) over the cellular system (103) when in range of the cordless base station (115). When the cordless cellular portable (101) is operating in the cellular mode, the radio channel associated with the cordless base station (115) is sampled for a predetermined time. When a signal on the sampled cordless base station (115) channel is detected, the cordless portable (101) moves to the cordless mode and remains in the cordless mode for as long as the signal quality of the signal on the cordless base station (115) channel exceeds a predetermined value.

Abstract: A portable radiotelephone (101) cooperatively operates with a cordless base station (115) over the local coverage area using cellular frequency channels. Both the portable radiotelephone (101) and the cordless base station (115) scan the available channels to generate separate priority lists. The portable radiotelephone (101) and the cordless base station (115) categorize the available channels in its own priority list from best to worst. The priority list from both the portable radiotelephone (101) and the cordless base station (115) are combined to form a master priority list. The cordless telephone system then assigns the clearest available channel from the master priority list for use in the cordless telephone system. Thus, interference to and from the cellular system and other users of the cellular frequencies is minimized and the need for frequency planning is eliminated.

Abstract: A portable radiotelephone with an integral voice recognition circuit is disclosed. Control of the voice recognition circuit is achieved with a foldable housing element (104) which, in a closed position, covers an external keypad (110) and control buttons. When the foldable housing element (104) is in an open position, the portable radiotelephone is placed in an off-hook condition, the voioe recognition circuit (432) is activated, and the acoustic transducers (320, 424) are coupled to the voice recognition circuit (432). When the foldable element (104) is in a closed position, the portable radiotelephone is placed in an on-hook condition, the voice recognition circuit (432) is deactivated, and the electroacoustic transducers (320, 424) are coupled to the radiotelephone. A rapid closing and opening of the foldable element (104) results in the voice recognition circuit (432) being deactivated while the portable radiotelephone remains in the off-hook condition.

Abstract: A unique a method for memory dialing for cellular telephones includes storing a recall sequence having a variable number, and replacing the variable number with a directory number in response to a prompt from the telephone when employing memory dialing. In particular, the method comprises the steps of selecting a memory location in a telephone for designating a recall sequence and storing within the memory location the recall sequence including at least one predetermined number which is automatically dialed by the cellular telephone and at least one variable number to be inserted by the user (59); accessing a memory location (60); responding to a prompt from the telephone (64); and replacing the variable number to complete a calling sequence (66). Finally, the present method provides for the transmission of both data and DTMF tones.
