A two-component pack for use in the treatment of hair comprises, as the first component, a methylolated compound which is monomethylol dicyandiamide, bis-methoxymethyl urea, monomethylol dimethylhydantoin, monomethylol ethyleneurea, monomethylol ethylene thiourea, dimethylol ethylene thiourea. monomethylol guanidine, monomethylol ethyl carbamate. N, N'-dimethylol (2-methyl- 2-propyl) propylene bis-carbamate, dimethylol ethyl methylene-bis-carbamate, dimethylol succinamide, dimethylol adipamide. N, N-diethyl-N'-methylol urea, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol ethyl carbamate or tetramethylol acetylene diurea in the solid state, and, as the second component, an acid polymerisation catalyst, either or both of these components containing a solution a nitrogencontaining compound which is urea, melamine, dicyandiamide, N, N-diethyl urea, ethylene urea, isopropyl carbamate, dimethyl hydantoin, ethylene thiourea, guanidine carbamate or succinamide, or comprises, as the first component, a methylolated compound which is monomethylol urea, dimethylol urea, monomethylol thiourea, dimethylol thiourea or trimethylol melamine in the solid state, and, as the second component, an acid polymerisation catalyst, either or both of these components containing a solution of a nitrogen-containing compound which is N, N-diethylurea, ethylene urea. isopropyl carbamate, dimethyl hydantoin. ethylene thiourea or succinamide, the relative proportions of the active ingredients in the components being such that on mixing the entire contents of the two components a composition containing 0.5-12% by weight of the methylolated compound is obtained. The number of amino groups provided by the nitrogen containing compound may be 0.1-1 times the number of methylolated groups provided by the methylolated compound. The amount of acid polymerisation catalyst, e.g. acetic, citric, lactic, phosphoric or sulphuric acid or sodium acid phosphates, may be such that the resulting composition has a # H of 1.5-3. The resulting composition may be in the form of a hair setting lotion.

The composition may contain a nitrogen-containing compound mixed with the corresponding methylolated derivative. The number of amino-groups provided by the nitrogen-containing compounds may be 0À1-1 times the number of methylolated groups provided by the methylolated compounds.

[Also in Division D1] Damaged human hair is restored by applying thereto a composition comprising a compound of the formula where X represents O, S or an = NH group, each of R and R 1 , which may be the same or different, represents H or a C 1-6 alkyl radical, and each of R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, represents a hydroxymethyl or alkoxymethyl group; and then drying the hair with the application of heat so as to polymerize the compound and give rise to a resin which reinforces the keratin of the hair. The treatment may be carried out simultaneously with a wave-setting operation by incorporating in the composition a resin such as vinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer. The composition, which may be in the form of an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution, a cream, gel or aerosol, may contain 0À5- 12% by weight of the compound and also an acidic compound to give a solution pH of 1À5-5. It may also contain a swelling agent, surfaceactive agent, penetrating agent, dyestuff or perfume. Suitable compounds are N,N 1 -dihydroxymethyl glyoxal-urea and -thiourea.

    Abstract: The invention comprises a substituted p-phenylene diamine of formula prepared by reducing 1-methoxy-2-nitro-4,6-dimethyl-benzene to 1-methoxy-2-amino-4,6-dimethylbenzene, nitrating this to introduce a nitro group into the 5-position after first protecting the 2-amino group, liberating the 2-amino group and reducing the 5-nitro group. A preferred method involves reducing and acetylating 1-methoxy-2-nitro-4,6-dimethyl benzene to produce 1-methoxy-2-acetamido-4,6-dimethyl benzene, then nitrating with nitric acid to give 1 - methoxy - 2 - acetamide - 5 - nitro-4, 6-dimethyl benzene, de-acetylating the product with HCl and reducing the 5-nitro group. The substance is utilizable in hair dyeing (see Division D1).ALSO:Keratinic fibres, particularly human hair, are dyed using a composition containing as essential component 1-methoxy-2,5-diamino-4,6-dimethyl benzene in the presence of an oxidising agent, e.g. H2O2. The composition may also contain other dyestuffs, thickening agents and/or surface active agent and preferably has a pH of 8-10.

    Abstract: A composition for dyeing human hair comprises an oxidation dye and a 5-pyrazolone as oxidation retarder. The preferred pyrazolone is 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone which may be used in a proportion of 1-50 mols per 100 mols oxidation dye base. The compositions may also contain as preservatives ammonium thioglycollate, sodium sulphite or ascorbic acid, as well as other known additives. The compositions may be mixed with hydrogen peroxide prior to application. Examples are given.
