[Also in Division D1] Aerosol compositions and detergent compositions for use in the treatment of hair comprise a basic composition comprising a mixture of at least one thiol and at least one disulphide of a thiol the mole ratio of disulphide to thiol being at least 1À5: 1. The thiol may be thioglycollic acid, thioglycerol, glycol thioglycollate, glycerol thioglycollate, glycol thiolaetate, #- mercaptoethanol, N-carboxymethyl-mercaptoacetamide, thiolactic acid or #-mercaptopropionic acid and the disulphide of a thiol may be a disulphide of one of these thiols although not necessarily the disulphide of the thiol being used. The pH of the composition may be adjusted, preferably to a pH of 9-10, by the addition of ammonia, sodium carbonate, monoethanolamine, diethanolamine or morpholine. The composition may be in the form of a liquid solution, cream or gel. Aerosol compositions may contain butane and Freon (Trade Mark). Shampoos may contain compounds containing polyethenoxy groups, sugar esters, lauryl sulphates, dodecyl benzene sulphonate, quaternary ammonium salts, salts of fatty amines or long chain amino acids, and may comprise 2-10% by weight of detergent 0À5-10% by weight of thiol and 3-50% by weight of thiol disulphide. The compositions may also contain perfumes, dyes, cationic products which facilitate the untangling of the hair and the application of the composition, swelling agents, e.g. urea, or sequestering agents.

Abstract: 1,129,527. Setting hair. L'OREAL. 15 Nov., 1965 [19 Nov., 1964: 16 Feb., 1965], No. 48449/65. Heading DIP. Hair is permanently set by subjecting it while constrained on rollers having a diameter of at least 15 mm to the action of an aqueous composition containing in admixture at least one thiol and at least one .disulphide of a thiol the molar concentration of the disulphide being at least equal to that of the thiol, drying the hair and then removing it from the rollers. The thiol may be thioglycolic acid, thiolactic acid, glycol thioglycolate, glycerol thioglycolate, glycol thiolactate, #-mercaptoethanol, N- carboxymethyl-mercapto-acetamide or thioglycerol and suitable disulphides are those of .these thiols. The disulphide may be produced in situ by oxidation of the thiol with hydrogen peroxide, sodium iodate, sodium periodate or sodium bromate. The composition preferably contains 0.1-10% by weight of the thiol and has pH of 8.5-9.5. It may also contain synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone, or a vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer, or polysulphydrylated polymer obtained by the reaction of #-mercaptoethyl-amine with an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, ammonia, urea and ethyl alcohol. The composition may be applied to the hair before or after it is wound up on rollers and allowed to act on the hair for .not more than 30 minutes, the hair then being rinsed, dried and removed from the rollers..Hair may be waved or-straightened by the process.

Abstract: 1,063,764. Photo-electric measurement of diffuse reflectivity. L'OREAL. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 5, 1964 No. 5147/65. Heading G1A. To measure the diffuse reflectivity of a substance in relation to a standard, light from a lamp 1 is directed by lens 2 and mirrors 14 and 15 to partially reflecting mirror 4. The reflected and transmitted light beams, when able to pass through one of apertures 12 in motor-driven drum shutter 11, fall respectively on test sample 5 and standard substance 6. Diffusely reflected light from these elements travels back through the drum aperture to the mirror 4 and from thence a fixed proportion is directed by mirror 16 and lens 7 on to the cathode of photo-multiplier 8. The output signal of the detector 8 is preferably applied, after amplification, to a cathode-ray oscilloscope. As the drum rotates the reference and measuring beams are interrupted alternately to give a stepped trace on the oscilloscope. Movement of the disc 9, which is a variable transmissive attenuator in the reference beam path, enables the trace to be made linear when the angular position of the attenuator can be read off as an indication of the diffuse reflectivity of the sample relative to the standard. A filter 3 may be introduced into the system so that measurements may be made for any desired light wavelength. By inserting an additional reflector in one of the beam paths the two images of a portion of the lamp filament formed via the two beam paths can be directly superposed.
